Repair or replace G-9000?
on: September 08, 2022, 09:43:34 PM
I haven't been on here for a long time, but I do seem to remember alot of watch-enthusiasts on this forum, so hopefully some of you can help me make an informed decision.

My old second-hand G-Shock G-9000 (Mudman) has lost a button. Normally, this would just be a matter of buying a new bezel for about 30USD and replacing it, but the crystal itself isn't exactly pretty anymore; I'm not sure what the previous owner did to it, but it got a lot of small marks. So, ideally, I would like to replace both the bezel and the crystal at the same time, but so far I haven't been able to find a crystal for this specific model, nor any examples of it being done successful.
I'm guessing the crystal would be at least as expensive as the bezel, so if it's possible, and if I can do it myself, I'd expect at least 60USD worth of parts.

Comparably, I can buy a second-hand GD-100 for about 55USD and possibly sell the G-9000.

All in all, I'm using the G-9000 about 40-60 days of the year, otherwise I'm wearing a smarsmurfch or a "fancy" watch, so I'd basically be throwing money at a shelf queen.

What would you do in this scenario, given a situation where finances only allow for one of the two options?

tl;dr - spend 60 dollars fixing old G-9000 and possibly breaking it completely or spend 55 dollars on another G-Shock?

Replace it and put your old watch in a place of retirement honor.

I think you made the right choice.  That is a great looking Mudman, but yeah, it's probably not worth the risk of repairing it- although it probably would be a fun project!

I'd say it looks well-used, might even battle-worn. It wouldn't even be that big of a deal to fix the button, but if I start spending money on it, I wanna make her look pretty.

I feel like it would only be right to follow up with some pics of the actual watch. I knew it would be bigger than my G-9000, but daym!, it's big. The pictures don't do it justice. The G-9000 looked big on my wrist, this almost looks out of place. Nonetheless, I'll give it a fair chance and see how I feel about it in a month or two.
According to the previous owner, it was bought in 2018, not that you can see it on the watch. There's a bit of grime here and there, nothing that a bit a water and a sponge won't handle and a small bend in the strap, which tells me that his wrists are probably about the same size as mine.
Other than that, I'm a happy camper.  :tu:

Sweet new watch! :tu: Perhaps the old Mudman could be refurbished by Casio someday? (I have absolutely no clue as to how good their warranty/repair service is.)

I'll be honest, that thought never occured to me. I have no idea how old it is and I'm not the original owner, so I'm guessing warranty is out of the question. Considering the prices for a simple battery change - at least in Denmark - I shudder to even consider the price for a crystal change. But I might consider it, somewhere down the line.

Casio has a first rate refurb/repair service from what I understand.  That being said, that new watch is awesome!!
