Taking a few days off
on: August 18, 2022, 10:24:02 PM
Megan and I decided to take a few days away, and we got an AirBnB on the other side of the province from where we live.  This is the view from the deck.

This body of water is part of the Atlantic Ocean called the Minas Basin, which, if followed to the right, goes to the Bay of Fundy, home of the highest tides in the world, and if you go to the left you end up in Maine.  Straight across the water is the next province from mine, New Brunswick.

It's a veautiful spot and there will be a lot more pictures for you all to enjoy with us!

The beach is about 30 feet below the deck, and it was cool to see how much less beach there was when the tide was in!  You can see the high tide marks in the picture below.

We are on the Bay of Fundy, where the tides rise and lower higher than anywhere else in the world.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_of_Fundy

It's hard to picture the difference in tides until you visit a place we went today- Halls Harbour, a small fishing village.

As you can see, the boats are literally sitting on the ground, but in a few hours the tide will be in and these boats will be floating in 30 feet of water!

What is amazing is that not only does the water in this little Harbour rise that much, so does the whole ocean behind it!   :ahhh

That's a lot of freaking water!

While we were out today I also decided it would be cool to check out of one of many waterfalls in the area.

A neat detail is that Nova Scotia is actually part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, a range mostly associated with the Southern US.  In fact, the Appalacians start quite a bit north of me, in Newfoundland!

Because of this there are a lot of neat waterfalls that I hope to see before we head home, although today's attempt to Black Hole Falls was something of a failure, mostly because we were quite unprepared for it.

When we left this morning the rain and fog were making it seem like a nice day to spend inside, so we decided to go into town and look around.  On our way from a town called Canning to the town pictures above, we stopped at Black Hole Falls, or at least at the trail head.

Google is not the most effective tour guide in much of this area as there are many places where you lose connection due to mountains, and so we headed down the trail.  Sure we were both in chintzy flip flops, but hey, the trail didn't look that bad!

Megan made it about 150-200 meters down the trail before she decided it wasn't worth risking an injury, and she went back to the car.

I wasn't that smart.

After all, the trail is actually listed as a road on Google, how bad can it be?

The photos below show how bad it was....

It went from a pile of large, ankle twisting rocks to a series of mud puddles.

Eventually I made it to the bluff overlooking the stream between the waterfall and the bay, but I didn't actually get to the waterfall.  I considered backtracking the trail, but with my Birkenstocks slipping around with every step and me already having mobility problems (I know what it feels like to break my ankles) I decided to head back.

If it hadn't been a 50 foot drop to the stream, I might have considered going down to the water and following it upstream to the Falls.... but that's going to have to be an adventure for another day
... preferably one with better footwear!

And, not to bring this thread down, but two things my Mom always loved- hummingbirds and the ocean.  She would have absolutely loved it here, as you don't even have to turn your head to see hummingbirds and the ocean!

What is the point of having a vacation if you can't share it with friends?   :D

It's been raining off and on since we got here, so muddy trails are to be expected.  And, if we had been planning to do some hiking I would have brought along proper footwear- which we did bring on vacation, but left them at the cottage!

They go quite far north actually.  They go to my father's place, which is at a much higher latitude than I am in Halifax.

Amazing that they can migrate from Canada to Mexico on such teeny wings!

Such a wonderful pictures.  Really neat how the ocean rises and falls so much in that area.  Those boat looks strange just sitting on the dirt.

Cool to see the Hummingbirds.  Mom had it right with the ocean and those wonderful little birds being her favorites,  a woman after my own heart.

We did some driving around again today, first visiting Berwick, the apple capitol of Canada.  We got some groceries and other stuff because Megan's parents were on their way to stay with us for the night.

Once they got here  we went to the Exhibition in nearby Annapolis.  I missed the tractor pull, I forgot to take photos during the ox pull but I did get a couple of photos from the horse jumping.

And a pic of vintage tractors, and the slightly less vintage farmers who own them.  :D

And I got another shot of a hummingbird, and some more amazing sunset photos.

The sunset is so amazing it even looks good in a photo shot by someone with no photography skills whatsoever!

We bought salmon yesterday as a treat for Megan's mother.  She asked for mayo.

Each night we see a couple of lighthouses from where we are- one is on Isle Haute, which we can't get to without a boat or some kind of aircraft, the other is at Black Rock, a couple of miles away.  We had a chance today, so we went to Black Rock to check it out.

That's when we saw how dangerous it was....and not just because of the rocks!

As you can see, that isn't a joke- the Creature of Black Rock isn't a myth!

Fortunately it stayed still long enough for me to get some drone shots of it, and I'll try to post those later.

Once we got home we noticed the tide was out- and I mean really out!

The water was well beyond the rocks.  It may not look like much of a difference, but when I zoom in you can see people that gives it a bit of scale!

One of the issues with such high tides is how quickly they can come in.  We went for a walk along the beach for a bit to see what the house looked like from the beach, but we had to hurry as the tide was already coming in, and taking away about a foot of beach about every 3-5 minutes.   Since I can't walk very fast at the best of times and the beach is largely rocky, it didn't seem like a goo gamble to stay too long when the tide is already on it's way in, but I did want to see what the beach under us really looked like.  I mean, I had looked with the drone, but I wanted to see it with my own eyes.

The place we are staying in is the closer of the two houses on the cliff edge.

As you get closer you see that the ocean has hollowed out some caves, which are also really cool to see.  I didn't spend a lot of time at them, just snapping a couple of photos and getting the heck out before I needed to call in a rescue team!

But, I needed to do it because the caves looked so cool, and the rocks all around didn't look natural- they looked like hot slag that had just been dumped there!

Even though this cave was just a little further than Megan was comfortable with going, I decided to check it out.  It wasn't actually that deep, but it would be deep enough to shelter in if it was storming, at least until the tide came to get you!   :ahhh

If I have the opportunity to go back down there tomorrow (we are leaving Tuesday morning and still have lots to see and do) I will set up the 360 camera inside the cave and hopefully let everyone experience it a little better than these terrible pics!
