Drawings from a Leatherman Design Consultant
on: September 26, 2022, 05:49:22 PM
Thought that this was interesting. From the site:

I was part of the team that developed the key initiatives and early concepts for the upcoming FREE P2 and P4 multi-tools. Critical differentiators that made it to production include one-hand-opening pliers, no nail nicks (the "No Digging" initiative!), and epic haptics. The final industrial design ultimately took another path, but shown below are the concepts left on the cutting room floor. Note the use of magnets. :D

It is a shame how many good ideas/concepts never make it to manufacturing.

I wonder if that is the new rumored snip scissors pictured on the “Built” model?

I bet the tiger stripe this designer wanted is the reason his designs did not make the cut

still 420hc blades. moar premium steel plz
those scales on every one of them look amazing but likely impossible to get machined in the US for a reasonable price. aren't the scales on the p2/p4 and the knives pressed and bolted on?

some really cool ideas there.
Some designs require a lot of investment and dedication to build efficiently at scale. And then you need to sell at a similar scale to get return on your investment. Not sure if that’s what happened here, but it sure seems like they settled for something that required less investment in production line. As well as not cannibalizing current products to the same extent, making existing production lines redundant.
I never warmed up to the Free series, but some of these would definitively have won me over.

I have interviewed Kenny Lohr for the Leatherman Historical Society and he was actually an employee for several years.  He was an industrial designer who would get basic sketched ideas from his lead and would have to go off andcreate fully realized illustrations and basically blow out designs to help the team bring some of the designs to life by seeing them fully imagined first through illustration.

There are some awesome designs in that link - it would be very cool if LT brought some of them out. Thanks for sharing the link!
