An interesting modular type of multi-tool.
on: September 28, 2022, 12:07:23 AM
Last year, I came across a multi-functional shovel of a variety I have seen in the past, but never got to purchasing one. This shovel had sections of metal tubs that you screwed together. Inside these sections were a variety of added functionality that screwed inside the tubes. In theory, you could shorten or lengthen the handles, and also add or remove some of the inside hardware. I bought it and was somewhat impressed at how well the pieces screwed together. I felt it was worth more than the paltry sum I paid for it...bad saying on the box and all. I then noticed recently, a modular axe that followed the same principle. I had to get it. Once again, I was more impressed with the overall build quality than the cheap price led me to believe. Same idea with the screw in shafts holding inside bits, etc. Just last week, I came across the same thing, only this time, it was a hiking pole. Same story there as well. This certainly makes for a nice sturdy hiking pole, and because it has more sections, they managed to pack a lot of extra functionality inside of it.

The shovel that got me curious about this type of modular multi-tool. This was acquired back in 2021.

The second purchase, this time an axe on the same principle.

Very interesting, I have never seen anything like this. Are they heavy?

Thanks for sharing :tu:

Both the shovel and axe are fairly heavy. They used lighter materials for the trekking pole.

Hi Chako,

I have always liked the idea of the break-down walking staff.  My concern was how strong they are.
Anyway, nice pics.  You have some of the coolest/strangest stuff!      :D

I have not used it yet, but initial observations tell me I would not be concerned overly in regards to durability. There is no play in any of the joints. This is a fairly well made pole for the money. Milage may very.

Do any of them use the same thread pattern?  Can you make a really long shovel?

I do not think that would work as the shafts are of different diameters.
