Brisk here too, at 22 degrees F 🥶
Hope it got warmer as the day progressed!

The MC’s cuticle pusher reported for snack duty  :salute:
Good use! :tu:

Day 22

A whittler I am not (yet), but I suspect the emergency blade would handle detail work pretty nicely.

It is a sharp blade but also a thin one. With some caution it may be useful, but it won’t be a heavy duty tool. Cardboard, plastic… but some hard woods could be to much. My old MiniChamp got the tip of that blade broken after some abuse from me, which I don’t remember anymore.

Also, the handle is too small, in my opinion, to allow a safe and comfortable use for whittling.

Having said that, I am not a whittler, so it would be nice to have the opinion of someone who is

Not tried whittling with the MC - but then I’m no expert whittler either!

Day 23

Used the wharncliffe blade to open the latest purchase - sterling silver Parker Sonnet fountain pen and mechanical pencil set for a very low price so I couldn’t resist! I had wondered whether they might not be the real thing as the price was so low, but they are - the nib is a nice fine nib in 18k. The only slight oddity is that they were both made in the same year, but the pencil is a Mk 1 and the fountain pen a Mk 2 in terms of style, but both are in excellent condition and work well so I’m not complaining, specially not at the price!  :D

My oldest daughter gave me a copy of that book a couple years back.
I wouldn't use the emergency blade too much in many woods.  The author, Chris Lubkemann works with a Tinker pattern and mostly uses softer wood for his carvings.

We met him once when we were in Pennsylvania on vacation.   I think I picked up most of his books too.

DAY 23
'orrible wet & cold morning here today
However, I arrived home to what was basically "a freebie" from fabregas485  :hatsoff: (isn't that what makes this place so great  :2tu:)

Here's the MC posing with the Pocketwrench (albeit a generic one, don't care  :dunno:) that it set free from it's VERY WELL packaged envelope  :surrender:

Just grateful that this sort of camaraderie (MTO spirit) exists  :salute:
Cheers Rhys  :hatsoff:

I'd have to keep the bone for me to make beads and such from.  The Boss Lady wears a ring that I made from one.

Day 23:

Massive amounts of package opening with the main blade today, as an onslaught of holiday presents arrived in the mail. Then a bit of travel, and I have now arrived in the mountains for a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks for the feedback! Now I know not to risk the MiniChamp when I start carving. I know Mr. Lubkemann favors a Tinker that he modified a little.

One instance in which I prefer scissors to the blades. The blades just chew up paper towel and tissue.

Day 23

Gutted and skinned an Amazon Brown. It had eaten some solar lights. :D

Great pictures and uses awl!  :tu:

Used the Phillips driver to tighten a tiny screw on a battery charger. Used the main blade to cut a bunch of packages and snacks. Didn’t have my phone on me so no action shots but managed to get a quick video later of my assistant with the MC

Found a new use for the spatula! It makes a good coin substitute for opening the battery hatch on a trackpad when swapping rechargeable batteries. Apologies for poor lighting, but it’s Stygian dark out there today!

Happy Thanksgiving to those across the pond (or celebrating elsewhere)  :salute:  :drink:
Mrs Surge decided that with awl the miserable weather we've been having here that Xmas should start early  :twak:

Here's the MC hanging off the "upstairs" tree (the "downstairs" tree will be up next weekend, probably  :dunno:)

It’s been wonderful seeing all of the great shots and uses by everybody- cheers to awl!
And a Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate the holiday. The MC main blade helped cut a test slice of some very delicious homemade apple pie made by m’lady. We are staying out at the cabin and celebrating with just us and the piglet- Seen below playing with her favorite toy.

She is definitely kind of a pig deal
