Let's take a minute to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the General's most famous accomplishment: breaking the sound barrier.
A quick and great read! :tu:

I've ordered new scales for both of my Executives since their current scales are in various stages of falling off, cracked, etc.

They need to look nice for the pictures I'll be taking of them!

I should get my replacement scales for my two Executives. I’ve never changed the scales on a SAK before, any advice?

When removing scales, unless you know for sure that you will not be re-using them, you may wish to soak the SAK in warm water for about five minutes. (Explorer has put them in a zipper bag and then given them the water soak, apparently with good results). If you wish to pry the old scales off, a 58mm file with screwdriver tip works quite nicely. Scale replacement awlso presents a good opportunity for cleaning; I use warm water and blue Dawn dish soap, then give the SAK a rinse and let it air dry. Of course, don't forget fresh oil. A bench vise can help apply even pressure when attaching the new scales. I've used slip joint pliers with pretty awl right luck.

And save the old scales if they're not totally trashed. They can be used for testing new polishes and enhancing your scale polishing skills. Once you've replaced one set, I'm sure you'll want to replace many more!

Thanks!

I don't plan to reuse the current scales on either of my Executives. They are in various stages of popping off by themselves as it is, one scale on each knife is cracked, etc. So I'm not too worried about that. Good idea on saving them for testing scale polishing though!

My two Executives are well used examples I got on eBay.

So November is my time to get them cleaned, sharpened, and oiled up. I’ve also got new scales for them since the both have cracked scales that are doing their best to Pop off by themselves…

Been checking out some prices on the eBay and have actually seen some that aren't too bad.   A lot of 2 went for around 25 dollars.

Don't forget to look at Directors, too.  They're the same but have stainless scales, usually with guilloche patterns engraved on them.
My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact

Some Fav's: 74mm's in general, Salesman, Pocket Tool Chest, MiniChamp, CyberTool 34/M, Compact
Likely to pick up soon:  Cheese Master, something with a pruner blade
Always keeping an eye out:  stainless with guilloche, interesting inlay logos
If I had a few extra hundred $:  91mm with long file, Wine Master

My SAKs don't have to be perfect by any means. But scales trying to come off really bothers me for some reason.

A couple things for people trying to snap up an Exec for the challenge, from someone who bought too many after they got disco'd a yearish ago.

1. Don't pay more than $35 (including tax, shipping, etc.) for a used Executive (at least in the continental US). If you get lucky, $25 total isn't undoable, but I  wouldn't go above $35. In general, the parts on the Exec most prone to damage are the scales (like most SAKs) and the file. If those two look to be in good shape, it's probably a good buy. New will obviously go higher, but I wouldn't pay the $70+ I see some sellers asking. New ones do seem to be available at or near MSRP from some Euro retailers, but the supply seems to have mostly dried up on this side of the pond. Check with your FLKS.

2. I'm seeing a lot of keyring-less versions popping up lately. I think 74mm is an ideal keychain MT size, so I would skip on those unless you're after it for something other than EDC (advertising collection, etc.). Even if you're not normally big on keychain carry, might as well try it for a week as part of the challenge.

3. If anyone is having trouble getting one, I'm still down to play quartermaster. Drop me a PM and we'll work something out.
