What is this "enough" that you speak of?

Not enough for forever but enough for the moment (translating to "I only had enough money to be able to buy these because I have more of the other type at the moment" )

Yeah they can have their one match but I'll have several UCO and a ferro rod plus some magnesium and fat wood to boot all as back up to my lighter.  While I like to fool with fire I am not going to be relying on a match or a lighter.  I have my emergency fire kit stocked with UCO matches.
Agree.  If talking survival, I like the idea of redundancy.  I don’t usually have matches; but I frequently have a couple lighters, spark wheel, ferro rod and multiple types of tinder.

Redheads is an Australian brand of matches they used to be manufactured in Australia but now made in Sweden.

I now remember from the previous page that RP had used that brand to make smaller match boxes :tu:

They look pretty cool :like:

Facebook Memories reminded me of this from 4 years ago today.  It seemed topical!

Yeah, they aren't the best matches, but they would do in a pinch.  Perfect for kayaking!

Also, I don't think any of them were used before I got them.  Likely someone set up a paddling kit, threw these in there and then forgot about them.

Redheads used to produce more sizes in their safety matches and have limited edition packs with various themes and artwork on the boxes. The boxes were and still are I guess quite collectible, as in the same way people collect SAK's.

Yeah I am thinking of picking up a bunch of them to stash in different places.  Short of lighting candles in the house, I cannot forsee a situation where that much fire would not be a welcome thing.

Problem with this is that they're not strike anywhere, you need the strip from the side of the box and that doesn't work when it gets wet. I find it rather counter productive. It also means that you need to keep a bit of striking strip with your matches where you store them.

Match striking surface is important and needed.  I'm going to guess and say most like me carry their matches in a water tight container with striker.

I do wonder if there is a match that can be struck on the file of the 58mm SAKs?  I should give it a try.  Strike anywhere aside I wonder if there is a reliable metal match strike surface available?

I am not too worried myself as I use a water tight container with strike surface.

I am not sure that strike anywhere matches are considered safe enough for the NA market as I can't seem to find them anywhere.   ::)

The author of this blog post went to some trouble to investigate:

https://www.99boulders.com/why-have-so-many-strike-anywhere-matches-been-discontinued

The TL;DR version:  a number of brands have been discontinued because strike anywhere matches incur hazardous material shipping fees (making them not profitable to sell online for home delivery in consumer quantities), but Diamond Greenlight strike anywhere matches are still fairly widely available in hardware and big box stores.

I have a small 'stockpile' of strike anywhere matches, i keep them in a waterproof keychain that was originally a peanut lighter. Some others I keep in non-waterproof kits, but have dipped their heads in wax.

Whilst playing around with them I discovered that Rough Rider's 'match strike' nail nicks are not actually rough enough to strike them. The file on a Compact, however, works wonderfully and feels like you're using a matchbox in hand.
