Just about two weeks until the initial deal! I don't know which smiley is more appropriate:  or :ahhh

Anyone else prepared to take a seat at the table?

I waffled for a while, but what kind of Swiss Army Knight would I be if I backed down from a challenge?

Might have to buy a fixie though. I don't think I want to be stuck with just a Kabar if that's what I draw...

Anybody got any good small fixed blade recs? Maybe a neck knife?

I've sought out fixie recommendations, and ESEE was highly recommended. Sooner or later I'll be buying a Candiru or an Izula, more likely the former (as I believe it would be better suited for neck carry). A Morakniv Eldris would awlso be a good (and inexpensive) choice.

You are fortunate in that you will have an easier time carrying a fixie than I do.

I'll second the Izula recomendation, although I think I prefer my Becker BK-11.  :dunno:

I think I'm going with the Eldris. I've used Mora's in the past, and I liked them, but I don't own any. Nice way to check a box for the collection. Found a bundle with the knife, neck lanyard, and a ferro rod for ~$35 up the river.

Thanks for the rec!

I now have 5 tabs of small fixed blades open. I was (mostly) done buying SAKs, and you guys had to start another challenge so I'd have something to buy!

My wife really likes the Mora though.

Seeing that we are talking fixed blades and trying to be helpful, I thought I’d let you know Arizona Custom just got a used Bark River Necker and Bravo EDC in and they’re still available.

I am looking forward to this challenge and how it is the luck of the draw.  A good hand with a nice variety is always welcome and hoped for, but how do you choose if you only get 1 or 2?  Especially if limited to one folder or one SAK.

Haven't done the challenge before, but my thoughts for if I could only carry 1 of each type:

Pliers: Probably my PST. It did me alright for November, and it's small enough to go most places without issue.

Trad/Folder: Some people say linesman or scout patterns count as traditional, so maybe one of them. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with a medium sized stockman.

SAK: I'm torn here between not wanting to lose my trusty Executive, and wanting a larger 91mm to do EVERYTHING given the lack of other options.

Fixie: I guess I'm sticking with the Mora. Unless I give in and try to express ship/find one of the others I'm looking at...

Just double checking as I plan. There is no situation where I'd need more than:

1. More than 6 tools total (straight flush).

2. More than 2 of the same category, except for the very off chance that I get 3 or 4 (but not 5) of the same suit in a straight.

Correct?

Here Nix did a great explanation on this challenge works:
Thanks, Sos!

You are right. Your hand determines which tools you CAN carry, but not must carry. If you end up with one of each, you can carry one, two, or all four for that period. So a high hand pays off in term of having flexibility and choices.   ;)

Now, if you end up with just one tool, say a SAK, you must choose one SAK from your collection and use that one SAK for the period in question. Rotating through a bunch of tools from one category is not permitted. So chose wisely!   :ahhh

So basically the minimum requirement to enter the challenge is 1 tool from each category(SAK, MT w/ pliers, Trad/folder, Fixed blade), of course, if you have multiple in each category, you will have more choices to choose from if your hand allows it.

For example, if player has gotten a "straight flush" with Spades, then he/she could carry at least 1(any one, and can be switched daily), but up to 5, SAKs of his/her choice. :tu:

Looking/commenting on the OP, we're explicitly not suit locked for any flushes, or for 4 of a kind. I assume to avoid making higher hands "worse" than middling ones. Happy to play it otherwise if I'm misreading, but going by RAW:

Suit locked wording bolded, any tool italicized, interpretation underlined:

  - High card — you start the challenge with one (1) tool that corresponds to the suit of your high card.
Max 1 of 1 type

  - A Pair — you start the challenge with one tool that corresponds to each of the suits of the two pair cards.
Max 1 of 2 types

  - Two pair — you start the challenge with four (4) tools, one corresponding to each suit of the four cards that make up the two pairs.
Max 2 of 2 types

  - Three of a Kind — three tools, one to correspond to each suit of the three of a kind.
Max 1 of 3 types

  - Straight — five tools, must correspond to the suits of the straight.
Max 5 of up to all 4 types, or as few as 2 types depending on the straight

  - Flush — four tools of any type.
Max of 4 of 1 to 4 types of your choice

  - Full House — five tools, must correspond to the suits of the Full House.
Max of 5 of 3 or 4 depending on the composition

  - Four of a Kind — five tools of any kind.
Max 5 of 1 to 4 types of your choice

  - Straight Flush — Six(!) tools of any kind .
Max of 6 of 1 to 4 types of your choice

Generally, I assume most of us would rather carry more types of tools than more of the same type. No fixie is going to give you the versatility of an SAK, no SAK is going to give you as good pliers as a Leatherman, no Leatherman is going to give you as good of a blade as a good fixie, etc. Trad folders are up to your personal feelings on blade quality/deployment vs pocketability vs tools against fixies and SAKS.

There's a clear progression from high card to a pair (more types and tools) and pair to two pair (same number of types, but more tools.) Three of a kind is mostly a win. You lose a tool but gain a type.

Straight is the most variable, since you could (I think I did the combos right) wind up with a 4/1 split (arguably a small upgrade to two pairs, and a toss up the other way for three of a kind), a 3/1/1 (straight upgrade for three of a kind, mostly better than two pairs), or a 2/1/1/1 (a clear win unless you really like carrying 2 of 2 different types of tool).

Flush is an upgrade over most of the straight combinations, except for the 2/1/1/1, where it loses a tool but keeps the same type spread. Otherwise you gain a tool type (or 2) in exchange for a tool. It does give you the option to really load down on one type if you want though.

Full house is 5 tools of at least 3 (potentially all 4) types. Again, assuming my figuring is right you could have: 2/1/1/1 (same as the best straight) or 2/2/1 (a marginal downgrade to the flush).

Four of a kind is finally a straight upgrade over a straight (:D). Same number of tools, full choice.

Straight flush is, suitably (:D) also a flat upgrade.

I will be the dealer for the first round. Comis will take the deck on the second round.

As part of my duties, I have to declare the trump order of suits. As a romantic at heart, I'm setting Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and then Spades:

For those who are new to poker, this means that if you have a high card hand with an Ace of Clubs as your high card, your hand can be beaten by an Ace of Hearts.  A Diamonds flush will beat a Spades flush.

Don't worry if this still sounds confusing, your dealers are here to explain things as we go.

First hand to be dealt tomorrow! There is still room at the table, but after Jan 01, the table will be closed until another year!
