If you could design the dream multi-tool…
on: December 10, 2023, 12:28:59 AM
Just a fun exercise here - What would your perfect multitool look like if you could custom build it?
What do you think of mine:

Based on a Victorinox Swiss champ:

Alterations:
• Change main blade to Spyderco drop point
• Change pliers to heavy duty combination pliers including large wire cutter and stripper
• Change mini screwdriver to iPhone opening tool or a drawing pin/thumb tack
• Change toothpick to a sewing needle and thread
• Replace magnifying glass with a superior quality one
• Move all screwdrivers to the end of the tool
• Incorporate seatbelt cutter into the bottle opener or another tool
• All tools to be made from Spyderco SALT steel
• Remove the hook tool

Scales modifications:
• Add LED light + battery slot in the scales (willing to remove if too bulky)
• Add window breaker (point hammer) to scales
• Add an ever spark wheel (from Outdoor Element) to scales

Tool additions:
• Add adjustable wrench
• Add nail clipper

Non-locking tools for me because of UK knife laws…
What do you think?

Welcome to MTO, HK!

I think the Swisstool Spirit is close to "perfect" for my needs, though I would love to see a Rebar with outside-opening tools.  Replaceable cutters on the Spirit would be groovy.

In the Swiss Army Knife genre, I would have a hard time improving on the Explorer Plus.

I like many of your ideas.

Nice mod ideas.
I was just thinking of how I could add a wrench to a SAK.

There must be someone on this forum who could tell you how to do that, and which wrench to use.

Hmm, i would use PocketGrip as base since it has combopliers and eliminates screwdrivers need cause it has 1/4" driver (it could eliminate also other tools you mentioned since those would come as accesories).

On my dream tool i would use Gerber CenterDrive with changeable pliers like on MP650 Evolution but more plier heads. Centerdrive as base dont much need explanation, quality would be offcourse better what Gerber now offers and i would pair it with
Hanes made mod Titan Orange Framlock Farmer (its just awesome looking) this would eliminate need of making either tool too bulky and fill each others missing tools. So it wouldnt be just one but two tools

Vic spirit with no pliers. And slimmer. As no pliers, small tools could be on both ends (both sides). Saw replace with cheese knife / fork combo tool.

Well perfect. I would make that so that can split half. So kind of like spirit handles. So could use knife and combo fork together.

In theory, I really like your idea Hamed.   :hatsoff:

I'm just not sure how you would be able to get the bigger and more heavy duty plier set to fit into that size tool.  Same for the wrench.  I HAVE seen people add a bigger and better blade to SAKs.

Why do you wish to remove the hook?  just curious.   :climber:

Not sure I’ve figured out how to correctly reply to individual responses here… but I find the hook has limited uses and wouldn’t mind using that space for beefier pliers

Tap the circle with the three dots in it on the post you want to reply to, then tap on Quote. That’s what I’ve done with this post.

I think I’d be fairly happy with a Free P4 with the serrated and plain blades switched, but even happier with a Mr Crunch with some kind of locking mechanism for the pliers, a combo blade, and possibly a saw.
