Day 30

This challenge has definitely made me appreciate combo-edged blades more.  If I had a personal assistant that would sharpen all of my blades, I might even prefer combo blades over straight edge.  Maybe I just need more practice sharpening serrations.  On the bright side, those serrations really shine when the blade gets dull.  :tu:

Day 30;

Yet another mail call.

\

Primarily mid '80s-mid '90s Lledo models, English-made--3X Shand Mason steam pumper (London, Chicago, and a convention issue), Dodge WC45, Bedford wrecker, and Ford Transit van. Jack Odell, one of the founders of Matchbox, founded Lledo in the early '80s after selling Matchbox to Universal Toys. The brand was sold to Corgi in 1999, and most production moved overseas, and eventually, totally merged into the Corgi brand (some of the military models, like the WC45, are still being made, despite being old Lledo models). The ladder truck is only marked "MADE IN CHINA" and is a copy of a large-scale Funrise light and sound toy (some collectors have suggested Funrise sold these themselves).

Final thoughts.

I have a bunch of PS knives, but for the most part, don't use them (even though about half the knives I used were regular EDCs--namely the GAK and Spyderco). I prefer PE and SE as separate knives.

Spyderco does serrations really well, as does Victorinox. These are the top performers of my SE knives, and the ones I always use. Almost all the others surprised me with how well they did. Despite this being the first challenge with the most diverse range of knives (from $20 budget folders to $120 Spydercos), I can't say (other than the Goldblatt) that I had one contender that wouldn't cut well.

Other companies seem to have serrations that rip, but don't really cut. Most budget knives are that way. Milwaukee did a super job on the Fastback Tanto. It's gotta be the first el-cheapo that could go toe-to-toe with nice knives that I've owned.

Day 30!

Thanks for the challenge everyone  :hatsoff:

Final challenge pic and closing thoughts:

I really like the Soldier 08, it’s a knife that I basically acquired “by accident” but a happy accident it has been. I appreciate that the tip of the blade isn’t really shaped for stabbing, but more for sawing motions and using the serrations. I have yet to poke myself with the tip and draw blood, but this knife has bitten me more than any other knife I have owned. I’m not sure if it’s because the forward serrations grab in an unexpected way, or that this is the only chisel grind blade I have used.  :dunno: The OHO is great and I do love a locking blade. The locking flat head is my second most used tool. The 111 frame is a great size. As I have larger hands, using the 58mm and even the 91mm feels like a bit of a trinket at times. As I have mentioned earlier in this challenge, I can’t believe I haven’t needed to grab pliers through the month! I may just keep carrying this as an EDC as it provides great utility, simplicity, and function. Maybe one day I will need the wood saw  :pok:

  everyone!

Day 30 - this has been a really interesting month and challenge in many ways but one are the knifes I have been carrying, I usually don't carry a dedicated folder and pretty much never a CB

Here are the ones I have tried

The petzl SPATHA did feel like a toy at first but quickly showed of being more sturdy than I thought, really sharp and being so light it disappeared in the pocket until needed.

The Opinel was also a great knife but I did not like it as much as I thought for edc, a bit bulkier than I usually carry and I did not like the lock

OHO trekker are something great and I love it for the purpose I usually have it to but a bit  big for edc and not my favorite blade but I do like how the serrated part are in the outer part of the blade

Non of these will be in the edc rotation but will have other places to shine

Petzl SPATHA will go live with my climbing gear and will be perfect for this

Opinel will live in my lifevest when kayaking and will be a good sturdy knife for cutting rope and campfire duties

The OHO trekker will go back to my outdoor pants and will continue to serve on adventures to come. It has never let me down and probably never will

Thankfully there are options and I will go back to my normal carry mod with one serrated and one plane blade. This works better for me and the blade shape and size are big enough for day to day tasks

Thanks to all who for participating in the second annual Combo Edge Challenge.

It’s been interesting to see some of the less commonly used but purpose built knives that a common in niche markets such as the Spatha, 08 Soldier, Gerber Paraframe  to name a few.

My Skeletool KBx still gets carried about half the week with a SAK, as it has been since the Challenge a year ago. As a secondary quick use blade the combo edge has been useful many times. Most of the work is done with the plain edge, but the serration elevates it to a multitool of sorts.

This month, the time that I legitimately used the serrations instead of the plain edge was to open a particularly finicky bottle of milk.

I’ll still carry my combo edge. That’s for sure.  :hatsoff:
