Advice needed (Victorinox model 75?)
on: December 04, 2022, 04:09:54 PM
Hi, I recently bought this SAK (which I think is a model 75 in fake mother of pearl). I like both the size and the toolset so I plan to use it but it needs a bit of work before. Besides some much-needed cleaning, one scale is broken and one of the pins is damaged, which causing a bit of play in the main blade. So here are my questions:

First, does anyone have experience with taking apart and reassembling this kind of SAK? From the outside it seems quite similar to the current models, but are there peculiarities I should be aware of? And does anyone know the size of the pins? I can measure them once it's apart but I'd rather have replacements ready.

Second, I can't find any source for the scales. The current slim 84mm models have a different pin setup. I could peen on the liners and then glue current scales on, but I like the exposed pins. If anyone knows where I can find the real thing I'd be very interested. I don't insist on fake MoP (actually I don't like it that much), cellidor would be fine (metal even better). The grail would be with toothpick and tweezer slots (I've seen pictures so I know they exist)

I’d usually look on ebay or etsy for scales, though I can’t recall seeing any for the slim 84 mm models.

You might consider sending it in to Victorinox for warranty work to see what they can do with it.  If you do this, though, I’d recommend being very specific in your correspondence about what you want and don’t want, e.g. you don’t want a replacement from the current lineup, you want YOUR knife back even if they can’t fix it, etc.

I eventually decided to follow your advice and send it to Victorinox. Now after 4 months it's back fixed (for free) and I couldn't be happier! They changed the scales for red ones (they consulted me before) with the added benefit that I now have the toothpick and tweezers (not period-accurate, they're just current ones that have been cut). My only gripe is that they replaced the brass liners and spacers with nickel silver ones. I guess they were too oxidized to be recovered, but for the price I can't complain!

Unbelievably great work! Did you send it to the main repair center in Switzerland or another one? The US location couldn’t fix one of my knives, so I had to do it myself!

I don't have the details but it is my understanding that it was sent to Switzerland, although I only interacted with the local representative.

That is a very cool knife combotool. Even more so with the scale change. I was confused after a look online, is this a 75mm knife or 84? It looks like ones labeled as accountant, but with scissors added. Do you have more details?

It's an 84mm knife. I identified it as a model 75 by looking at the catalogue pages on SAKWiki but I don't have any additional details  :dunno:
