Calling All Compact Experts!
on: December 03, 2022, 11:12:27 PM
I got an older Compact in the mail today. It was supposed to be an 84mm Golfer original but that’s fine - I didn’t pay typical Golfer prices for it.

But here’s the thing… there’s no nail file on the hook!

But it is a 91mm SAK, that’s for sure.

Here are a couple of tang stamp pictures to aid in putting a date on this knife.

So… did they make some Compacts before they started putting the file on the back of the hook or something?

Here are 3 links, one for the history of the Compact one for the Tang stamp and one for the hook

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Compact

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+Tang+Stamp+Guide

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Hook

From the history  of the Compact, the tang stamps, and the history of the hook yours is a 1992-97 and the early Compacts did not have a nail file on the hook

The nail file was added in 1998

That’s very interesting. I knew about the tang stamps and the date ranges. But I didn’t know about the gradual evolution of the 84mm Golfer into the Compact that we have today.

Looks like there was a 91mm version of the Golfer too:

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Golfer+91mm

The SAKWiki doesn’t really give date ranges for production of the 91mm Golfer from what I can see though. But the one I have has plus scales, which the 91mm Golfer with the combo tool never had, so it looks like I have a pre-1998 Compact.

But I guess I can see why someone might think it’s a 91mm Golfer though.  :dunno:

I made a statement about the Golfer that was incorrect and i could not get it to modify it so I typed this since I can't erase it

FWIW I own a 91mm Golfer—complete with a “Golfer”-stamped original box—that is indistinguishable from a pre-nail file Compact.
This leads me to believe that the transition from Golfer to Compact was merely a name change.

My 91mm Golfer which I got from the Swiss Centre in London in 1991 had plus scales but no hook if that helps.

It does. In fact, both of my 91mm Golfers—one with hook, and one without—came with plus scales.
