Paul Chen Cas Hanwei Professional Tool.
on: August 09, 2021, 11:57:15 AM
My mind was officially blown a week ago when I came across a US retailer selling a Paul Chen Cas Hanwei Professional tool on Amazon.ca. I bought my first copy back in 2009 and haven't given the tool much thought afterwards other than it is proudly displayed in one of my Gerber collection drawers due to its affiliations in design. I assumed that the Paul Chen Professional tool was long discontinued, but I am wrong. I bought another to see if there were any differences between the 2009 and the 2021 copy...and they are identical.

I had to make a little room for the second copy, but managed it nicely. The Paul Chen are the ones with the exposed black pliers (in case you were wondering).

Fiskars also sold it as the Excalibur Multi Snip:

I forgot to add the  :pok:

The intent of my post was to be a joke instead of informative. I assumed you knew about the Fiskars version given how long you have been a member and your knowledge of MTs.

I actually like mine. I've found it useful in the garden.  I think it could have done without the little pliers though.

Agreed. I always thought they were an afterthought to the design.

Are they still crazy cheap?  Never owned one myself but I remember being very impressed with the quality for the money.  :)

It's only $17.04 on Amazon U.S. so I ordered 2 of them back in May and gave one away. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017BIHXRG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1&pldnSite=1

I wanted to have one just as an oddity in the collection but the shears are very sharp and it turned out to be a halfway decent user.

What's the take on this tool: "good for the price" or an unqualified "good"?

I'm primarily familiar with CAS Hanwei as a brand of swords and fantasy knives from Spain; not really high quality stuff.  That said, I evaluate products on their own merits rather than just the reputation of the company.

If you want a full size set of shears it's pretty good. Very sharp and will cut cardboard and stiff plastic sheeting. Most folks are more concerned with pliers in a MT though.  It is made in China not Spain.  Paul Chen / Hanwei bought CAS Iberia years ago and became  Cas / Hanwei.

I sent mine back   :dunno:    The saw's stop was bent so it wouldn't lock open and went past the stop. The shears were fantastic though  :tu:

Mine did the same thing, I guess just a flaw in the design. Maybe that's why they are so cheap.

/bump to this thread.

I recently watched a video about this multitool. Such an oddity because of the shears, history and the fact that it has remained in production for so long but in another company. I loved it.

So much that I have been looking for it but it seems to be totally unavailable in europe, unable to ship from the US and also unavailable in chinese retailers. Oh maaaan.
Will keep trying as it seems so interesting.

@Chako that is a veeeeery cool colection : )

Best part is, that the shears are are compatible with the Gerber MP-600 frame. And the MP-600 is probably the easiest frame to customize to your liking.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.
