RAT Cutlery
on: February 02, 2009, 03:39:31 AM
Just posting to see if anyone here owns and uses any of the RAT Cutlery blades.  I've heard nothing but good things about them; both the knives and the company.  Not many pics out there of the RC3 next to a OHT or something us multitool nuts would recognize though (hint hint) :D

This setup looks fantastic...It reminds me of an old school setup..but with modern materials and construction.

It's an aftermarket leather sheath by JRE that's licenced by RAT I belive; the sheath that comes with the knives are functional kydex/plastic, but not as nice as this leather.

And here's the knife I'm contemplating getting;

I am on the lookout for anyone selling/trading any RAT knives...just to throw that out there :D

I share your love.  I have wanted a Rat ever since I had seen one.  I was close on a trade for one but my item would have cost wayyyy too much to ship.

I have the RAT RC-3MIL and its one of the best knives I have ever owned.  Well made, nicely finished, the sheath it comes with is top notch and from what others say the service is great (although I have never needed it so I cant say myself).

There were a couple of Rat-3s (including one in D2) over at KF a couple of days ago. Check it out. The D2 version was selling for like $80!  :o I know it cause I though of grabbing it for my bro in the marine corps. He decided to go with a CS SRK instead...

The Izula is one on my short list. I actually believe it will be the perfect bag knife for my needs. Plus all the Rats I have held were great cutters, using a great Carbon steel.

I have a RAT3 that does nothing but sit in the closet begging to be used. Have not used it but a few times and it has not seen the light of day in months. I might entertain a trade if you had something I needed  :-X

Which begs the question... what do you need?

Hmm things I am looking for

Leatherman Crunch
Leatherman Skeletool CX
Leatherman Flair

I love the Juice line, I have a XE6 but would love a KF4 or S2

Any of the new knives from Leatherman (Crater or Expanse)

I am really a knife guy, more so than I am into tools (hard to tell huh?) I would be interested in getting my first benchmade knife, maybe even a spyderco I don't have (military or paramilitary would be cool)

If you don't have any of the above I am interested in suggestions.

The Ti Lite seems cool (been wanting one secretly) The M95 is cool but I am like folding blades more than fixed blades. Anything else?

I was just looking at rc-6 yesterday, really like it but seems quite expensive for a piece of 1095.

If you want to save a few bucks you can still get a lot of the RAT designs from Ontario knives.  They have the RAT-3 and some others.  The finish and final touches arent as nice at the RA Cutlery ones but they work fine.  I have an Ontario TAK-1 that works great and was a pretty decent price.

So I found two good deals from two different members on Bladeforums and yesterday received a RC3 and an Izula (with kit).  All I can say is WOW.

They are some of the most comfortable and well balanced knives I've ever handled.  Top quality in every aspect.  The RC3 has a good "heft" to it without being "heavy".  And the tip of the blade lines up with the point of the pommel...something I always looked for and liked in knives.  I find knives designed like that I can control better, and drill a small hole easier If I had to.

I haven't used either besided slicing through a sheet of paper or two, but they will definately be going outdoors this summer.  Hell, by then I might even own another RAT blade!

I have an RC-4 and an Ontario RAT 3 (in D2). Both are very good knives with great F&F. The RC knives are a bit more refined, but both are spectacular. I haven't really used either, unfortunately. I wouldn't carry one around town (concealed fixed blade in Los Angeles? hahahaha, that's funny), and I don't hike or backpack enough to where I would really need a FB. I really should use them. Not using a knife that's meant to work is like spilling a beer at a party...it's a foul.
