£50 Fixed Blade.
on: February 22, 2009, 09:26:49 PM
Ok this months going to be a tad lean, nevertheless I've got a budget for about 50 quid to spend on a smallish fixed blade :)

At the moment the leading contender is another one of these to replace the one Def stole from me  :D
http://www.heinnie.com/bo2yw81208434/Knives/BK&T/Becker-Necker/p-92-537-3672/ I'm after one with a TDI clip, but no one in the UK seems to have one ::)

One of these or similar, as I really feel I should give Scandi grinds another go :-\ http://www.heinnie.com/bo2yw81208434/Knives/Helle/Helle-Speider/p-92-150-3740/

One of these for the same reason as above :) http://www.heinnie.com/bo2yw81208434/Knives/Karesuando/Karesuando-Survival-10cm-Fire-Starter/p-92-301-3023/

And finally, not the version I want (would like an original unused Ontario/Camillus one ideally) one of these http://www.heinnie.com/bo2yw81208434/Knives/Spec-Plus/Spec-Plus-SP2-Air-Force-Survival/p-92-190-1658/

But I'm open to sugestions and a bit of a debate too :)

I would like to get it from the UK though, as I'd rather not run the custom's gauntlet atm if possible :)

What are it's dimentions mate ???

It looks a little small, and I really need at least a 3.5 inch blade :)

It is very cute though

Oh in that case mine are too small....they are only 2.5"

(Remember, size is not everything, its what you do with it that counts   ;))

As for what I intend doing with it (we are talking blades right ) Batoning for one :)

I'll not rule it out for a later day though, as if it could be made a sheep's foot, it'd make a great camp whittler or started knife :)

Not much to add buddy except I've found nowt to beat your Mora for the money .But if I had to choose I would go for the HELLE SPEIDER the scandi grind may take a bit of getting used too but they look great and none of the Tacticool problems from the sheeple  ::)

I'm going to recommend avoiding those Puukko notched for scraping firesteels. They don't work any better than a properly squared spine.

I've had two Visa brand Puukko done that way, the grinding on one was particularly badly done. I eventually replaced the blades in both.

Just glancing through the makers you listed, good as they are, neither of those knives would be my first choice.  I do like the look of this one though:http://www.heinnie.com/product.asp?s=wt632s1209220&strParents=92,301&CAT_ID=301&P_ID=1233  Same price range as the Speider but without that ugly guard.

Or if funds can be stretched slightly how about this: http://www.heinnie.com/product.asp?s=wt632s1209220&strParents=92,150&CAT_ID=150&P_ID=1120  The Eggen has always caught my eye.

No personal experience of either knife, I'm just going with what appeals to me.

I'm not sure about the Eggan, I've just heard to many horror stories (probably just woodied legends :D) to feel confident using it :-\

Over on BCUK there we're quite a few instances of the Tang breaking during batoning (could have been poor technique) and delamination of the blade :(

On the plus side they did stand by there warranty :tu:

Fair enough, that doesn't speak wonders for the build quality does it.  :-\

Trouble is it's not always easy to sort fact from fiction on the web :-\ .I'm sure there have been cases of delamination, but they can't be all that prolific as the company would have gone bust :)

And the snapped tang could have been caused by poor technique, and being only a rat tail, it's going to be less forgiving of novice mistakes anyway ::)
