The Scout Master had his BSA Tinker that he's carried for years and one of the boys had a Hiker.  It was kinda funny -- he showed me his "Tinker" and right away I saw the saw blade hiding down where it does, and I was able to surprise him with the correct identification.

Many of them had stories of knives they had inherited from Grandpa and didn't know anything about.  They left inspired to go home and learn more about their knives.

It was really fun, and I would encourage anyone who knows a Scout or a Scout leader to offer something similar.  I was also wearing my great-grandfather's BSA whistle (you can just see it around my neck in the picture) and they thought that was very cool too.  :)

 :salute:

That is very neat.  I'm sure it was fun for them to go home and look closer at their knives.  Maybe even inspired the next generation of enthusiasts.

:iagree:

What are modern scouts typically carrying if anything?

My daughter's old group are still pretty old school, but very much tend towards Mora knives rather than a pocket knife.

It varies.  In my son’s troop, I’ve seen everything from cheap imports to SAKs to various locking folders to fixed blades.  Many of the boys don’t routinely carry knives though, as the penalties for being caught with one in school are rather draconian.

Around here (SE PA) it's (most to least common):

1. Standard modern single blade folders.
2. Traditional style (a few of the guys have their dad's, granddad's, etc. that's been passed down, but mostly modern) campers, stockmans, etc.
3. SAKs

Sheath knives occasionally for some of the older boys who are doing "mountain man" trips, and every once in a while someone shows up with some mall ninja crap. Most of the camps/troops around here encourage or mandate non-locking folding for the younger boys so we wind up with mostly slipjoints.

Sounds about right.  My son Eagled a few years ago now, and even then he’d already list interest in traditional scout pattern  knives.

On another note, my local pocket knife club got together last night and I took my Case scout collection.

Thanks fellas!   It bookends from the 1930’s up to 1973.   I think Case discontinued the 6445 in ‘78 or thereabouts, so my group reflects all the tang stamps, but there are some earlier can opener varieties that I don’t have.

Nice!  As I wrote in another thread, I’m really impressed with the F&F on this knife.

The big shield Camillus semaphore scouts.     I have a "Camp," a "Scout,", and two "Standard Scouts."   If anybody has a good "Stainless Scout" or "Signal Scout" that is surplus to needs, I'd love one of either of those in my collection!

I don't have either of those Scouts, but that sure is a beautiful line-up! :like:

Hey thanks, Steve!      There are just a couple more I'm looking for, but these are beautifully made scout-pattern knives from the golden era of Camillus. :)

I have a few I could show. The one at the top is marked only "Made in USA" (Cody6268 knows who made it; hopefully he'll stop in and jog my memory). At bottom are a Camillus 99 that's likely of 1960s vintage and a Ward's whose vintage and manufacturer I've not been able to pin down.

Beauties!  I think your Ward's dates to the 1930's or thereabouts.

Great collection of Scouties, Farmer X!

Thanks, Myron! :hatsoff: I'll take a better look at the Wards. It would be very nice if it was 30 years or so older than I initially figured it was.
