Over on the vintage SAK’s thread we’ve been discussing if anyone EDC’s a vintage SAK and what actually constitutes a vintage SAK, which has got me thinking it’d be really cool to do a vintage SAK 30 day challenge  8)

As pointed out by Huntsman, the OP of the vintage SAK thread felt the cut off was 1970

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51152.msg2392090.html#msg2392090

But that was nearly 10 years ago and apparently most antique dealers think of vintage as 40+ years (according to Google at least  :D), so I reckon 1986 and earlier will be our cut off date

We’ll keep the rules nice and simple
1. Post a pic of your vintage SAK everyday for 30 days
2. You can use just one or swap around as you like as long as it’s from 1986 or earlier
3. You should aim to use it before any other tool but if that’s not possible, explain why it wasn’t suitable for the job
4. In use or just glamour pics are fine
5. If you’re unsure of the date of your vintage SAK we’ll use the MTO brains trust to try and figure it out, want to make the challenge as accessible to as many people as possible
6. Really want to hear how you think your vintage SAK compares to modern models, so the more descriptive the better
7. Victorinox or Wenger…..or something even more exotic like Forges de Vallorbe accepted (man, I’d like to see a mod 1890 in the challenge  )

For inspiration

https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1890

I’m thinking May as there doesn’t seem to be anything else pencilled in then but open to move it if that doesn’t work. Also gives everyone a bit of time to obtain something if they don’t already have one

Sign up below by adding your name to the list

The oldest SAK I have only just squeaks into that time frame. I will give it some thought...and this might mean I'll be moving the SAK challenge I was planning up to April.
USN 2000-2006

One to four layers of SAK is (usually) best for me.

Cool Dan, be great to have you join in
I made it May rather than April as we usually do the fools of April then

This will be fun to watch. I have none that fall into the required timeframe as most of mine are modern.

I did look at trying to get an Alox BYSAK but 1967 seems to be a bit elusive/expensive (unless you know different )

Best of luck awl  :salute:

I'm a 67 baby too. Managed to get a nice BYSAK a couple years ago from a seller in Switzerland. The blade has seen some wear but still works great. The other tools and the knife itself are in very good shape. Might have to bring it out and use it for the May challenge. I've not participated in a challenge yet, but this would be a good one for me. Most of EDCs are from the 70s or early 80s so I would have plenty to choose from throughout the month.

This will be my first challenge, but admittedly it won't be too difficult. The majority of my SAKs are in the required date range.

Hoping you can both join us, i know BYSAK's can get a little pricy (try 1962 for eye watering prices!) but there's other older SAK's to be had for much better prices

I might have to buy another SAK to participate in this challenge!

My oldest one right on the cusp…

Hi Echo,

My Farmer may be old enough. The tang stamp indicates it was made in 1986 or earlier, and its brass liners may mean it was made in 1984 or earlier:

Is this close enough for entry into the challenge?

Hi Guys, definitely happy to have both of you join
The 83 cut off is pretty arbitrary and anything pre-86 is close enough as far as I'm concerned

Great to have you both on board

UPDATE:

I've asked SurgeUk to modify the title of the challenge to SAK's 1986 and earlier rather than 83
You guys have brought up a good point about how accurate it is to date them and 86 was the year a number of them changed, the V on the tang for example so think it makes more sense

I've got that I'm certain is pre-86, one that fairly sure but memory may be bad, and at least one I'll need some help dating, but I'M IN! :nanadance:

Good call on swapping the the '86 cutoff, makes it much easier for people to ID. I have a Huntsman that I think would've snuck in for '83 (holeless awl) but much cleaner call now. Dropping a couple resources I used last night to help narrow the selection:

This site has a lot of info (mostly from MTO) for IDing knives.

The wiki has an easier to read (IMO) tang stamp guide here

Does anyone have any good resources for Wenger (all I could find is a basic tang stamp guide or two) or 93mm? I think there's some arcane formula based on rivet and liner material, presence of spacers, etc. that I read about in an article once, but I can't find it.
