Wirestripper Mod
on: January 17, 2023, 05:57:27 AM
Inspired by HVAC Budget, zrxoa1, annd others here  and on Reddit, I am beginning my first set of LM mods.  The plan is to incorporate the SOG wirestripper into a PST and Wave.  This will require some dremel work, but I do not have a workspace set up at the moment.  I’m also waiting to disassemble the Wave to install a t-shank adapter once it arrives.

So, for now I am simply dropping into the PST on the outside of the frame. It’s basic and will allow me to test out the strippers. They should serve my basic needs even if not great as others have pointed out.

Sits well against the frame with 1 washer taken from the file. It needs another against the screw, but I do worry that displaces too much of the thread from the post. I will need to test optimal washer location to not put tension on the screw.

At any rate, this is the first attempt. Just a drop in no grinding or filing. It might sit better to replace an interior knife or file position, but that will not work without further modification given the round end.

Follow up posts to come with more details and any reprofiling done to the wirestripper.

I wonder if this qualifies for a mod user badge?

Thanks, awl! I can’t take credit for a novel idea, as HVAC budget added it to a SOG and modded it for his Surge. I was inspired by those posts.

I’m in search of a better wire stripper solution on my Wave and might just get a couple of these to mod a few MTs. I do quite like it on the PST.

Thanks, Adam  I recommend it. Right now I’m testing washer configurations, and 1 washer between the stripper and frame works for spacing. Two washers and it swings free. I may try screws and post from a blast or fuse for additional length here to help. Need to measure those and work out a test system here.

Hard to say whether front or back of frame is better for the tab. It might just be preference.  It’s also loosening the screw when opened away from the pliers as that matches the screw thread orientation. I’m hoping threadlocker will solve that issue.

Quite a bit of work for such a simple addition. I’m hoping to try it out soon.

Thanks, H B!

Tried a new placement against the plier post and this feels a bit better in the hand and rests more flush against the frame than the tool end.  I still need to install a washer and took some measurements to find some more (post diameter is 3/16” on the PST).

I also ordered 2 more wirestrippers to mod my Wave and possibly another PST.  The Chinese t shank blade exchanger also came in. I’ll be looking back to your posts, HVAC budget again for that mod. It seems decent enough quality.

Hopefully I’ll get these finished soon for use.
