Do colored alox saks fade very quickly?
on: February 02, 2023, 08:43:05 PM
Is the finish on the colored alox models durable?
I tend to use them less than I would like for fear of degrading the finish. I usually carry the sak directly in my pocket, without keys, coins or anything like that. I've tried using leather pocket organizers, but I don't get used to them... I guess I should use them more to get into the habit, using a cover is ruled out.
I guess I should enjoy my saks without worrying so much

They hold up fairly well from my experience. But they're not invincible. The area where the keyring hits the scales is often a good indicator.

However, some of us do like the look of a nicely worn alox scale  :salute:

This one took 60 years...

 :iagree:

I really like the look of worn alox myself so if you use the SAK, personally I wouldn't worry. Ones for my collection like the yearly LE's I don't carry and do like those to be pristine

I've been carrying the orange Pioneer X for a year now and it still looks new. I think it lasts a while before it starts to fade though YMMV.

One thing's for sure -- laying your black Pioneer down on pumice stone will wear that finish faster!

Use and enjoy your knife.  When the finish is past what you like, get a new one.  :)

Well if you are going to transport a colored alox model in your pocket, alone with no hard objects, it'll probably stay pristine forever.  But wait, you say you want to actually use this thing as a tool?  That would involve occasionally banging it into things, dropping it, having things fall on top of it, etc.  So gradual accumulation of nicks and little silver glints peeking through.  Kind of like a guitar: you can keep it pristine in a case or you can play it and get the inevitable dings and scratches.  My solution is take a silver one for heavy use and knocking around and save the colored ones for lighter use.

I like the look of a worn coloured alox and am almost ( haven’t done it yet) tempted sometime to take a bit of emery cloth too them to ‘age’ them….however, that also seems like a good suggestion to me. My silver farmer X gets lots of use but you don’t really notice with that colour.

I took those photos very, very carefully.  It doesn't have a little scratch

The care taken shows, too.  The knife looks pristine and the pictures are beautiful.  Well done!

For what it's worth, I once thought I'd give a red pioneer that worn look with some hardware store steel wool.  I buffed one scale a half dozen times with no visible effect at all.

I was also worried that my black alox Cadet would fade. I have had it for 4 months and I always carry it in that little change packet that most jeans have inside the right front pocket. I make it a point to not put anything else in that pocket with it  So far, it still looks brand  new
