Wenger. Genuine, homemade, custom or fake?
on: February 09, 2023, 08:08:53 PM
Sometimes you’re lucky, sometimes you aren’t. What happened? Recently I saw on the internet an advertisment about a very interesting Wenger SAK item. I was working overtime, had to take care of my wife (toothache) and her horse, and I had not much time left to do an indept investigation of the Wenger. When I looked at the ad, I saw the item was already offered for several weeks, but no one had made an offer. I thought ‘What’s wrong with this rare item? Why is no one interested?’ I noticed the seller asked a rather high starting bid, which in my experience make people reluctant to offer a lesser amount.

Anyway, unfortunately I had no time to investigate the item to check wether it was original or homemade, so it was a bit of a gamble when I made a lower offer. Within short notice my offer was excepted, I paid for it and two days later it arrived in my mail.

Was the Wenger item genuine, homemade, custom or even fake…? At first glance, it looked like it was indeed crafted by some hobbyist. If so, I just paid a lot of money for some home crafted item. The best thing I could do was to take a closer look at the item and try to find out which model it is. So I tried the internet (including MTO) – to no avail. My last hope was Sakwiki. But it had no information on this partuclar pocket knife. So, I decided to dig deeper into the Sakwiki… into the catalogs. And there I found not much, however sufficient information about this specific Wenger model!

To be continued…

I know...  :pok:

My investigation became more a kind of journey, a mental adventure.
I discovered that he can opener is pre 1975, the scissors even pre 1973. The tang stamp is between 1966 and 2008.
The nail file is a variant I haven't seen been before on a Wenger.
And what about the Cork Screw AND Phillips SC? How can it be that both tools are situated at the back side at the same time???

The catalogs in the Sakwiki were of great help. It turned out that I bought a Wenger with model numbers 779 L and 739 L, nicknamed in 1970 as 'the champion'. It's the same model as the 16935 ‘Monarch’, but without the schackle.
But is it a genuine item, not home made?

To be continued...

There is a mod shown on the mod forum done by Helvetica Bold that uses both these back tools. I am not an expert but have never seen both on any production models.

There's another option...
Well, here's the solution: It's a shop display item!  :ahhh

779 L = Champion with screwdriver
739 L = Champion with corkscrew
(Sakwiki: ”1960s – A catalog from the mid-‘60s”)

And it is genuine. When the item arrived I thought it was homemade, however when you look at the picture of the blade, you'll see the blade has NO sharpened edge. That's for safety reasons, and it is something that is surely not available for sale or retail.
Long story short: I bought a genuine pre-1972 Wenger 'Champion' shop display !
I'm a happy collector  8)

YES, of course!

Thanks for all the comments. I myself was suprised when I found out is was a 50 years old, original display item, overlooked by other collectors. I asked the seller where he had found it, and he wrote me he bought it together with some other things at a antique/vintage shop. Anyhow, for the time being this item has been saved from being scrapped  :SAKnight:
