SAK user seeking Leatherman
on: August 07, 2023, 09:19:13 AM
I'm stepping out of my usual turf on the SAK board seeking advice.

I want to buy a plier-based multitool to keep in my car.  I want the best pliers I can get, screwdrivers are a plus.  I live in Phoenix, so it has to be able to stand up to the intense heat.  Looking for something to rival a  Victorinox Farmer and a dedicated set of pliers.

Suggestions?

Thanks, y'awl!

As weight isn’t an issue I’d suggest Charge, Supertool 300 or Surge…the Charge has become a fave of mine in the four months I’ve had it but ST300 or Surge might suit you better

Supertool 300.

Weight doesn’t matter for your use, and no removable bits to drop in the dirt when you’re under your car in the middle of the night.

I assume you’ll still be carrying a SAK for the scissors in case you need them, and for when you’re not in the car.

Hey El C :waving: great to see you in here

As already recommended above a couple times, the ST300 is an awesome car tool :woohoo: I keep a Supertool of some sort in every vehicle myself  :salute: :like:

I would also recommend getting a LM Bit Adapter kit to go with it :tu: it is a half bit kit and a 1/4 inch adapter for the square shank Phillips  :salute:

For the value, and utility the SuperTool 300 is what will fill the order and serve you well.

I agree with Poncho’s suggestion as well.

My trust for my ST300 is simple. A good PE blade, a nasty cut all SE blade.  The saw blade to cut hoses, plastic conduit and branches.
Dedicated flat driver blades that do not disappear from the bit holder when needed and a kick arce  Phillips tip  .  Not to mention one of the larger multi functional plier heads.

The REBAR is the identical SMALLER MODEL, it serves well as a great solution for pack or pocket carry. 😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

As awlso a mostly SAK guy, I'm going to... fifth the Supertool. I bought/traded for about half a dozen LMs before I decided they just weren't for me. The bulk:tool:convenience ratio just wasn't there (for my use case). The one exception to that was the ST, which is just a big ugly do it all beast. The tools on it are great, the whole thing feels solid, and the tool load out is everything most people could want without any random junk.

I'm going to go against the grain and say a Surge.  In fact, that's what I keep in my car - a Surge with a bit kit and ratchet extension.  :tu:   What you'll miss with a Super Tool 300 is a diamond file, scissors, and a one-hand opening blade.  If those are not important to you, then get the Super Tool  :tu:

I’m going to buck the wave and suggest Swisstool or Spirit. Most folks find it more refined than LM tools.

I don't know if most do but some  I can never get along with them as they are always nail breakers compared to SAKs and LM

Harder to open, slippery and inferior pliers and drivers compared to the ST 300.

If I had to pick a Leatherman, I'd pick my ST300.

HOWEVER, in the spirit of bucking the trend, the odds, or what have you, you could buy the following for the same price as a ST300:

-24" breaker bar with impact socket to fit your lugs
-7" Knipex pliers wrench
-5" Knipex cobra pliers
-Cheap multi-bit screwdriver, wire ties, and a roll of duct tape.

I've never used a SuperTool 300 or any of the other multitools that Leatherman calls "heavy duty" (Surge, ST300, Crunch), but I'll follow the crowd and recommend the ST300 or its little brother, the Rebar.

In addition to the multitool, though, you should get the Removable bit driver https://www.leatherman.com/removable-bit-driver-126.html that attaches to the end of the Phillips driver and accepts regular 1/4" bits. Combine the bit driver with a set of regular Hex and Torx driver bits, and you have a toolset that is much more versatile for car repairs.

I'll go along with the ST300. It's pretty much an upsized Rebar, and the Rebar is probably my favorite of Lestherman's current lineup. I need to get another one, as mine went to a member in the Czech Republic.

Thanks for awl the responses. I guess I’ll start looking for a used Supertool…  to be clear it’s  4.5” and the Rebar is 4”? Pliers slightly larger on the ST?

Also, message me if you have either model  for trade. I have a BUNCH of SAKs.

Cheers!

I read your message and LOL!

The ST300 and my Rebars are the last MTs I will if ever part with for cash or trade.

Sorry.    Yet, the two remain the better valued MTs you can buy new😎

I would suggest buying a good used Supertool, ST200 or ST300, whatever is cheapest off ebay.  I have an ST or a SwissTool in all of mine, and honestly I never use them.  If real tools are around, they are used first.  Second would be the tools I am carrying.  The multi-tools I store in vehicles are the backups to those.

Terrible phone shots, but wanted to show that the difference between the Supertool 300 and the Rebar really is significant.

The Rebar is tough and capable, but the Supertool is in a different league.
