Did 108mm SAKs become valuable all of a sudden?
on: March 12, 2023, 07:05:25 PM
Last year, I bought myself a lightly used GAK. Good shape overall, though the blade had obviously been used. I paid about $35 for it, which I thought was reasonable to a little high. Good knife, feels great in hand, and has all the important tools. I was thinking of picking up a spare (since they don't make them anymore) and went over to ebay.

Found one in a lot with a used Pioneer and a Classic and put in a bid. Whole lot went for about $70, which was more than I was interested in paying. Looked up others and didn't see a single going for under $100. Are they the hip new EDC trend? Did I get really lucky last year? Or are there just not a lot on ebay right now and the prices are higher than they'd normally be?

Good question.
It seems that a lot of items that are no longer available have increased in price lately from sales that I've been watching.
I'll be curious on the opinions of others.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

It seems inevitable that discontinued Vics and Leathermen will fetch crazy prices sooner or later. My interest in 108mm models has waned, and I wouldn't take a Classic unless it was effectively free. That said, assuming awl three were decent, $70 for the lot that BPRoberts missed out on isn't nearly as bad as some asking and selling prices I've seen lately.

I've noticed a jump in price in the 108mm GAKs and related civilian SAKs, too. Crazy collector economy, I guess.

I was wondering if one of the EDC influencers decided they liked them or something.

It could be a crazy economy or one of the "influencers" going gaga over them. Another possibility is an influx of new SAK hobbyists. Or maybe just a bunch of bidding wars started by people with deep pockets. Hopefully it's just a cycle, and the wave is currently rising.
