Sandwich Alignment
on: June 28, 2023, 11:28:49 PM
I got a new (to me) Kamp King today, and I was thinking a little about what really counts as a scout/camper (obviously a Kamp King does!), which made me remember this chart.

Thoughts?

I'm on the verge of structure neutral, ingredient rebel, but the ice cream taco (RIP) is pushing it. Although if I have to call it a sandwich to get one, I'll call almost anything a sandwich.

Structural Purist, Ingredient Neutral but bordering on Rebel. Technically the latter applies.

I don't care what they call it, a sandwich must be something sandwiched (hence the verb) between two slices of bread. If you chuck it in a burger bun, it's a [ingredient] roll.
"In Britain, the British Sandwich Association defines a sandwich as "any form of bread with a filling, generally assembled cold", a definition which includes wraps and bagels, but excludes dishes assembled and served hot, such as burgers"... However, they are also wrong, as a fried egg sandwich, aka the Egg Banjo, saw soldiers of two world wars and many a Brit through many a situation long before the BSA were even founded. Similarly, bacon sarnies are a mainstay of our culture.

Growing up outside of Philly, I don't think I can accept any definition that doesn't allow a cheesesteak to count.

Also, what if the burger bun (or similar bun, roll, etc.) is sliced in half like bread?

If you fill it with something... cheese, for example, then it just becomes a cheese roll, cheese baguette, cheese sub, etc...

If the structure or the ingredients are neutral, I'd consider it a sandwich. Will have to figure out what the "chip butty" is. Thanks to Keeping Up Appearances, I know what a "bacon butty" is.

I'll get back to you on what constitutes a camp/scout knife. :D

I started working on a similar chart for the camper last night. Currently going with Form and number/type of tools for the two axes. I think either/or neutral is a fair middle ground that most people could agree to.

Go up your local British fish & chip shop. Get a portion of chips. Put some of those chips on a buttered slice of bread, ideally in two layers perpendicular to each other. Salt to taste, then dowse in ketchup. Top with another slice of buttered bread. Eat, delight in the flavour, and try not to feel your arteries hardening!
Alternatively, go up my local fish & chip shops, and just ask for a chip butty!

Apparently there's one for tacos too! I don't know enough about tacos to have strong opinion (I guess true neutral?), but I appreciate that an ice cream taco is still SNIR.

I lean structure purist, but a calzone is literally just a pizza folded in half (and the best form of pizza for take out.) Does a slice of pizza cease to be a pizza if I fold it part way to eat it? Definitely ingredient rebel. Who am I to judge what you put on your pie?

Jeezy, this has become quite a mess.... And my alignments do not actually align any more!!

Tacos - Technically SPIN, purely to allow for slight variation in the basic ingredient concept, but also allowing for Taco Bell since that's about the best version of this cuisine available in my locality.

Pizza - Technically SPIN, but I love Hawaiian... and the award-winning, consistently No. 1 pizza place near me does their pizzas square, which we love because you get more pizza for your money... and because not all traditional Italian pizzas are round, anyway.
I would also exclude the likes of calzone, panzerotti and stromboli, because they're shaped before cooking, rather than just being pizzas that are folded or rolled... even though they're amazing!!

I take the same approach with pizzad that I do with sandwiches: neutrality with structure or ingredients. When it comes to tacos, however, I'm a hardline traditionalist. Taco Bell has its place, but authentic it is not!

There's a salad one too. I think I'm SPIN. Salads have to be cool and wettish.

Salad is a harder one for me to call, mostly because I smurfing despise lettuce and refuse to eat it.

Before I stumbled into this thread I had a fairly organized and orderly food world view with categories and definitions to match. While some categories are wide, and some definitions blurry, I also think that if you stray far enough from those definitions you would be outside of the category - something matching one partial definition isn't enough. Otherwise categories cease to be meaningful, and we'll have a major communication issue. Hopefully the local pizza shop wont have seen this and give me burger when I order pizza..
