The folks at Vosteed are always working on new designs, and they have some clever names to go with them. The latest one they've released is called the Corsair. The name didn't click at first and I had to go a Google search to jog my memory what the name means, Corsair is another name for a pirate or privateer. Unfortunately this knife didn't come with any booty, but it does cut like a cutlass. Let's take a look at the new Corsair.
The handle comes in at 4.4 inches long, has a 3.25 inch blade and an overall length of about 7.65 inches. The handle is comfortable with a sight swell where your fingers curl around it. Vosteed does a great job with Micarta, it's always smooth yet enough texture to provide grip .The three channels cut into the handle is a nice touch, the pad of my index finger and the base come into contact and provide some additional grip. Some Vosteed handles have a pronounced flat area in front of the place where your index rests. The Corsair is no different, it's not as pronounced as some models but does allow for a little more choke up on the handle for power or controlled deep cuts. Without choking up my pinky just barely find some material to hang on to, and that's ok. This being a smaller folder I don't always expect all fingers to have enough real estate. The pocket clip is standard company fare, it does give me a little pokey in the meat of my palm when firmly gripping the knife, but it's not enough to interfere with a long cutting session.
The blade on the Corsair is a drop point style. It's provides enough belly for everyday cutting tasks and a point that about in-line with the middle of the knife. The high flat grind makes it a really good slicer for everything from food prep to opening your Amazon packages. It's a great all around shape, and the profile is aimed at what most of us use a blade for. The tip being close to the middle of the profile makes it great for draw cuts. I'm one that likes a tio that in the middle or slightly lower than the center of the blade's profile. With other blade profiles, they're either all belly or all tip, this style is a nice compromise. Lastly the thumb ramp with jimping helps control of the blade and helps keeps your hand locked in.
The company's has a few locking mechanisms they use on their knives, with the cross bar lock being the newest. The cross bar is a generic name for the Benchmade Axis lock. This style of lock is probably my favorite due it being ambidextrous, and the fact it keeps my fingers out of harms way. Simply put I'm clumsy, and anything I can do to keep me from doing something stupid, is A-OK in my book. It's easy to use and it just works.
Overall I think Vosteed has done a good job with Corsair. I don't think the name fits the style, I would expect a different handle and blade shape for sure, but it's a great knife regardless. It's a good all around blade shape, ambidextrous lock and clip. All the hallmarks of a good everyday carry knife, at an affordable price.
