Old Japanese multi
on: July 05, 2023, 01:25:26 PM
Well it isn't exactly a Swiss Army Knife or a Leatherman multitool, but it is pretty big.  The thing is a post war Japanese make.  You can see the leather belt pouch.  Pretty much everything there including a big spoon and fork.  Bone handles.  It was pretty rusty when my Dad got it 60 years ago.  We were going fishing, and he bought it at a little country store from someone.  Along with snacks.  The knife maker is Mitsubishi.  The knife isn't marked except for G. C. Co. that is for Gutmann Cutlery who was the vendor.  The strap on the sheath is marked Mitsubishi with the three diamond brand.  Might not be useful, but it was one great plaything for a child like I used to be.

Steve, I tried to carry this thing when I was a lad.  It was a terrible pants puller downer.  I did use the spoon and fork a time or two at the dining room table.  My Mom insisted on washing the eating tackle before she would let me use it.  Best wishes.

That's a cool piece of history. I have a similar knife but never used it. Just bought it 'cause it was cheap and out of curiosity. It's a nice piece to have in any collection.

Thanks for sharing!

That could be the same reason my Dad bought this one.  I have no idea what he paid for it.  Maybe a dollar or two.  You could buy a good Case knife for about $6 at that time.  It seems to me that Guttman had a cutlery factory in Germany and they also sold other types of knives.  Edgemark?  That seems like the name they used here.  It seems strange to me that the Mitsubishi trademark is only on the case.  Is yours marked that way too?

Thanks Dan and Lefty.  You know a person can learn all sorts of stuff from this site.  Like Brick Bradford on Lefty's informational thingie below the avatar.  I never heard the name in my life, but found out it was an American comic strip, comic book, and movie serial.  Best wishes. Gary

Sorry for the late response. It took me some time to find it (yes, I have way too many unused pieces in my collection).

Didn't find any markings, except for "Japan" in the blade tang and "Stainless Steel" in the back of the spoon. Very similar to yours, it seems.

Once more, the Compact is used for scale comparison.

The only nice feature is the cutout in the (very poor quality, but still not falling apart) leather sheath, so the knife has only one position and sits as flush/stable as possible.

  :salute:

A couple of pics of the box it's in. I paid like €5 for it, just to keep as a curiosity. Considering the price and the state the box/knife is in, not a terrible deal.

 :D :D

Both large and small sides have the same image/printing.

Your multi is much cleaner than mine.  I tried to take a better picture of the sheath markings, but didn't do so well.  Mitsubishi is written across the top of the snap in an arc with the familiar 3 diamonds trademark under it.  The sheath is somewhat different.  The leather is dyed red with pointed studs on the strap.  The stocks are different.

Finding the box has to be a rare thing.  Got to be worth 5E just to play with.  Not really a high quality tool, I think you will agree.  But big and fun anyway.  I enjoyed the photos a lot.  Best wishes Gary
