Most often when a tree needs felling or a branch trimmed, I'll reach for my chainsaw. It makes easy work out of hard.

But there are those times when nostalgia comes calling and I reach for my comfortable leather gloves and an axe. Also, when it comes to splitting wood for campfires or the fireplace, I'll typically reach for the axe. I haven't ever used a maul or a dedicated motorized log splitter. My axe has always done the work just fine.

I caught the two of them relaxing on a small fallen branch and thought it looked like a good opportunity for a photo.

Dedicated motorized log splitter? I think I'd take a pass on that one.

Nice photo; it's making me look forward to getting my new axe a little more! :tu:

TRUST me, a log splitter would be a welcomed member to our family.

You might pass on it, unless you processed 24 cord a year or something.  Not needed for the casual chopper but for a lot of processing, and quickly, they are a Godsend

I've got a very old Stihl 024 chainsaw and an old Stanley, wood handled axe.

I learned in the 1980's that the maul is the proper tool for log splitting but there always seems to have been this romanticized version of that chore (on-screen usually) where an axe is used.  It works, obviously, but not as well as the Maul

I've split wood manually and I've done it with the log splitter.  After getting the first few logs out of the way in the manly way  ::) you'll be looking for a log splitter too!

Nice axe by the way!

As others have noted, if you have a lot of wood to split, it is far easier, quicker, and safer than splitting by hand.
