Day 6

Shh! Don’t let my kids know🙄

Morning walk this morning, it was snowing and lovely, except pavement areas  that were wet froze icey.   But, I was ready, sort of!   Two walking sticks, and a weighty Multitool on each side for Ballast😉

Snow so far has only accumulated maybe a 1/2”.

But, it was pleasant, air was still, icy snow falling like pellets, yet no cars and DARK GREY clouds in the sky. The crisp cool air felt good to breath in😜

No pictures, 😵‍💫 left phone/camera on kitchen table🙄

A   Barnaminium  picture set in the snow.

Sounds like a peaceful morning  :dd:

Day 6

Used the serrated blade to open a box today.
Inside was some Tung Oil to use on some wood handled fixed blades.

I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the results maybe ?  :tu:

Day 6

I had a slight problem with the OHT design today  :ahhh

If you go back and check my pics in several November PST challenges, you'll see my pic of removing screws from a outdoor light while setting up Christmas lights.  In all of the following challenges in January, you'll see me using my tool to put the light back up as I take my Christmas lights down.  Well, I was doing that today, and I discovered that the very wide OHT bumps into the glass of the light when screwing the cover on.  It's just too chuncky.  I got it to work, but it was far less than ideal.  :td:

That is an issue with OHT, so with Gerber sliding plier designs.

It is not on STs or Rebars or other LM models that allow you to open the opposite handle 280 degrees extending the tool length.

Hello to Day 6.
Ol' Santa delivered a wee something to me last month that I have been pottering away with.
Normally I give Santa a lot of help making deliveries to our house and it most always includes an MT.
This year the Dept of internal affairs and she who must be driven everywhere got a Lego Landrover.
Nearly as nice as an MT.
The OHT comes in handy when blocks are assembled incorrectly and need separating.

I've used it on some of my Opinels and on my M-1 stock but I don't know too many people that use it either.  Lisa, what's the oil on the bowling lanes?

I'll ask my Uncle tomorrow.  He keeps the lanes clean and in charge of pin setters.

Using Tung Oil on your M-1 Stock makes sense. Also, Lisa’s plans for vintage Wood knife scales.

My dad (a commercial/industrial painter by trade) would bring home a half gallon of the stuff, and have we apply it to the gun stocks on my 20 gauge, gramps deer rifle and both 12 gauge shot guns.  All were pre 1940s.
This was a project, required disassemble of the guns, lightly buff with 400 grit sand paper, then brush on a light coat of Tung oil.  Wait 5 days, apply another coat always wiping away any runs.  Repeat this process 5 more times, for 6 coats each.
An application takes between 3 to 5 days to dry (set up).
Provides excellent moisture protection of the wood, but once done an occasion wipe down with Tung oil at end of season and then a couple applications the next summer the wood will stay glossy for a long time.

I also was tasked with doing this with grandma’s large bureau, two upstairs dressers that her brothers build for her.
Even our church’s pipe organ was treated to this care and all the sitting surfaces of the church pews received at least two coats (maybe more). But the same duration between coats made the task a pain.

But if you had OLD wood and wanted to properly care for it, TUNG OIL was what you used to protect your investment.

Today gun stocks are made of laminatese, maybe dipped in polyurethane on exposures surfaces.  Cabinets are made with veneer's, there are so many products to finish wood, one or two coat applications, a day at best to dry before use.
In fact my one outdoor wood bench gets linseed oil treatment every year.   (I imagine a Gallon maybe two to properly treat it today. Would cost more than the walnut bench) and (take me a summer!)
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I also think it was used on original gymnasium floors in the 50s through late 60s, the why no street shoes allowed , only sneakers or socks.   Provides a high gloss and protection with multiple coats then polished.

Day 7

Another comparison picture, the OHT & ST300.

This time, my most frequently used tool…
THE SERRATED BLADE
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The bottom picture actual surprised me, as the OHT and ST300 handles are the same length!😜.
I always thought the ST felt longer and OHT fatter.

Both knifes cut great though, and so far have not needed sharpening or touch up, just cleaning after some messy tasks. Actually only the ST3 as I have used it multiple times processing game and packaging for freezer storage.  😏never thought of using the OHT :dunno: Maybe to tough to clean

The story on the Tung Oil.
I have a knife from a maker in the UK.  The scales started to shrink a bit and he said I should use Tung Oil to hopefully help them swell back up.  If it doesn't work he has a offered to take the knife back and make it right.

Uncle says the bowling lanes are now synthetic, no longer wood.

The knife has antler and wood scales...all of it is not stabilized which caused the shrink.
Apparently the climate where I live dries out the scales and caused this.

My bad, the  synthetic bowling lanes is what I was  my wow response!☺️!

Beautiful knife.

Yes, Tung oil or mineral oil may  soak in to restore size.  But, better that the knife maker stands behind his build. 👍

Found an Amazon delivery this afternoon on front porch, expected it Tuesday per last update.
