Victorinox midnight manager with microcontroller
on: September 30, 2023, 11:08:42 AM
Hello,

I'm Torsten and an automation engineer from Berlin.

I'm collecting donations for the development and construction of an interchangeable miniature circuit board with microcontroller in the Victorinox "midnight manger" pocket knife.

This will make it possible to operate the (one) white high-performance LED with different modes at the touch of a button.

 e.g.

-long press on, release off (as usual

-short press on, stays on, short press off

 - short press on, then long press, LED slowly dims until you release the button, then remains on at the set brightness, short press off

 - Short press twice, flashing light on, short press off

 - Short press 3x, SOS continuous morse code starts, short press off

 - after 15 minutes auto shut off to save electricity (?)

 More ideas possible...

Thank you very much guys. Greetings from Berlin

that sounds like a great project. I like the Midnight Manager.
However, I have to pull your link for now.

I would suggest a slightly different UI for your consideration:

Single press = full brightness, single press = off

Press and hold = ramps up from minimum, release stays at current brightness, single press = off

Triple press and hold = cycles through various blinky modes, release stays at current blinky mode, single press = off

5 presses = lockout mode (off), 5 presses back to non-lockout mode (normal functions).

Looks like a great modification.
There has been a few attempts in the past,  they never made it past the one off and prototype stages unfortunately.

I personally like the ramping UI with short cuts to high and low. Similar to a LRI Photon Freedom micro light. There is a very nice selection of warm white 3mm LEDs that are available now.  I'll keep a eye on this thread, wishing you all the best.

I'm looking for a very bright white 3 mm LED. But no one I have tested is brighter then the original one.
I ask Victorinox but they don't tell me the type of the original one.
So I will use the original one from the old boards for that project.
If someone need some more information send me a pn.

This could make me reconsider not having any 58mm's with the light.  Super idea.
