Alox bail
on:
January 30, 2024, 04:09:18 AM
So I’ve kinda somewhat maybe possibly caught the modding bug again. But this time I’m keeping it to myself, for now, maybe I don’t know. Anyway. Has anyone successfully made a alox with bail comparable to the ones made long ago? I want to do this and I’ve seen a few here and there but no real explanation on how and tools to use etc. If you have done one please share some pics, tools, process and failures as well.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I have seen a few modders on here that make perfect ones, so hopefully they are around still and will chime in. I have made 3 “freehand” ones and left them unperfected so they have a very handmade look.

My method on these is to take 1/8 inch steel
Rod and pound the end flat and shape it. Clamp the piece in the vice and make the bends, and then hammer the other end flat. Once they are more or less true I drill out the pin holes. For me it has been a challenge to make the sides equal, top parallel to the edge of the knife, and the holes completely centered on the flat parts. I am already planning the next, and while I have a weird attachment to the challenge of doing it freehand, I am considering making a metal piece that I can hammer the rod over and into the initial shape.
Some failures: aside from having holes slightly off center, I have broken 2 in process. If you bend it too many times or too much then it will break.

I have misspoke it seems. We are are on the same quest. I am trying to make the hollow rivet as are you enginears! I have some more stock coming in today as my first one I ordered was the wrong size. I will be glad to share my results here.

Amazing work as always Samek. I notice the addition of a washer under the bail. When you rotate the bail back and forth, is it spinning around the pin or is the entire pin spinning?

I was sure, that only bail is moving, then I check and, surprise, pin, washer and bail are rotating together!

I found this pic on the web. I believe this is what we need.

I would more recommend these, bit expensive (seems 60$) but those have right sizes for hollow rivets.
https://www.mcmaster.com/products/hollow-rivet-installation-tools/
Option 2: bit cheaper 38$
https://www.beadkraft.com/1-16-rivet-tool-kit-punch-flare-hollow-rivets-each
There might be cheaper options too but those 2 came in mind.
