Introducing myself and my query in one!
on: January 25, 2024, 04:24:19 PM
Hia - I've joined up here today to try and find out what a certain tool is after asking lots of peeps and getting a variety of inaccurate answers. Hope someone here can help me : ) I've attached a pic. Fingers crossed. Oh it is about 6-8 inches long and a finger maybe, wide.

Hmm, using Google lens it looks like a rivet or this from Etsy. Lot of similarities but yours is much bigger.

Not sure about moderation on here as Ive just arrived, but a friend sent me a pic of that tool, concerned about it's possible alternative use... I want to ask if it's common for it to be used for anything other than what it was made for?

Maybe the Ancient Order of Carpet Makers used it to bleed out their rivals and enemies? I hear carpet making was serious business  Seriously, that would really sting.

 Hi Saz,
I don't think that was a rebuke.  Just someone making a funny.  Not much else to do with it, really.  The tool looked familiar to me, but I couldn't name it.  I think David had to look the thing up online to find out what it was.
There are some members here who like old tools.  Many more just collect pocket knives or some sort of multi-tool.  What else could the old carpet tool be used for?  I have no idea.  My Dad worked for years in the carpet manufacturing trade.  When they were moving huge lengths of carpet out of the machinery, they would sew one piece to another and feed them out of the dye kettles and into a huge inline dryer.  Did they use that particular tool?  I simply don't know.
I put a few old strange tools on the site, just for chuckles mainly.  A set of pliers that were used to repair gas burners.  Another that was used for replacing leather belts on antique sewing machines.  They got a few guesses and a laugh or two.
Very few, and maybe nobody actually ever used one of those carpet splicers of the members here.  As such they have passing interest, I suppose.  Every post on here has quite a few readers.  Gathers a few comments.  Then they are replaced by another new post of some sort.  If you have any interest in old tools, there are a couple of sections here that should prove interesting.  At any rate, you are welcome to post here and enjoy yourself.  You might get some jokes, however.  Good jokes.  Poor jokes.  Not funny jokes.  All kinds of jokes.  All kinds of people from all over.  Best wishes.  Gary
