Roxon Flex: User Configurable, Open Source MT
on: January 27, 2024, 12:22:42 AM
Hey! I hope everyone is well. I saw this tool advertised in SHOT videos and came over to see what was being said about it and did not find a thread yet.

I think Leatherman is about to lose some market share.

I just love how clean it looks, the angles, the pliers, no extra fluff on the handles. Definitely getting one.

Looks like the blade exchanger mechanism from the GOAT

See below for comparison. It might not be identical but it looks pretty darn close  :dunno:

I don't own the Goat and am not affiliated to either of these companies.  I think the cutout part of each tool implements  on Flex do look a little like Goat(probably unavoidable, since it is the nature of a Modular tool implement), but how the tool is being fanned out or locked into the chassis does look original on the Roxon flex.

Personally, I quite like the open source idea, and just hope they could execute this well, so it ends up being user friendly and an actual tool that folks would like to use, instead of buying one as a novelty item.

I also hope it's well executed. I was a bit disappointed with how fiddly the GOAT is to use so, if this works better then I might have to get one

Interesting. Roxon have been one of the most interesting to follow the last few years.

I'm definitely interested, but I honestly do not have high hopes that it will be anything beyond a novelty tool.  For example, go to the 20 second mark and watch how the tools pop out from just clicking the pliers together.  Like the GOAT tool, I'll bet this is another "Good idea.  Bad execution."  :(

Good on Roxon.  Open source is great and the price seemed fair.  While we'll have to wait till one of y'all to pick it up and report back it looks promising.

I don't think there's need for a quick change possibility. Just make it easy to open with standard screws, and make the tools available. It is not meant for just anyone, plenty people are happy with the existing models.

Yeah, I caught that too. I hope it gets fixed by tweeking tolerances and stuff before release, otherwise it may be annoying. Unless I tighten the pivot screws a lot. Which is also annoying.

Still, I like how sleek it looks. Imagine what Syph007 and ZapWizard will be able to do with this platform. :dd:

It's a common-ish mechanism. I've seen it before on other knives and work tools with swappable blades, saws, etc.

Leatherman does it in the Leap blafe and Victorinox with the RescueRool glass saw. So, they could have a tool with everything removable for a while now.

We were approached by the team  at Roxon to check out a pre-production version of the new Flex model. I know we're not the first one's to have the opportunity but I couldn't turn it down, after all were the #1 source for everything multitool

I have recorded a video of the unpacking and assembly, since the tool was empty of implements. When I go to town next I'll get this uploaded and put the YouTube link here and in the review section. I wish my internet wasn't so crappy,  but for now all I can give you is photos.

Any questions you guys have let me know, I'd be more than happy to answer them. Overall I'm super impressed by everything. This thing is going to be a hit with lots of folks.

Is it just a trick of the light, but the tools look kinda thin. How much torque can for example a 2D Phillips driver take? The more I've used multitools, the more I've become aware of their limitations. The answer is probably "enough", but I've managed to twist and bend a few MT parts in my time...

It's hard to tell without the tool in hand. Does it give you that solid feel that it can take it?

I'm looking forward to seeing what tools modders and creators make for it. Full Phillips, t-shank holders, bit drivers, Damascus blades, carving blades.

It does feel quite solid, it's not cheap feeling at all. I don't have an calipers to check with (if I keep doing video reviews I think I'll need them) and I think I can weigh it later today.

The Philips is indeed thick and 3D in nature. I did mention in the video there's very slight side of side play, after playing with it some more there slight up and down as well. Nothing out of the ordinary from some of the other tool companies out there.
