The Sportsman Challenge - April 2024
on: February 01, 2024, 10:13:33 PM
Well, I've been hanging around here long enough at this point. I've participated in several challenges myself and really enjoy them.

I've done some searching and can't find a reference to a 30 day challenge dedicated to the Sportsman and thought I would suggest one myself!

Only one blade? No scissors? Can you find creative uses for the nail file and nail cleaner? Seems like it would be a fun SAK to really spend some time with to me.

I was thinking maybe March for this challenge but would certainly be open to suggestions. Anyone interested?

I would be interested. It would give me a reason to buy a Sportsman

I’d probably pass on this one, for a couple of reasons.

For one, I alternated between a Sportsman and Cadet for the Tween 84mm/85mm challenge last June.  I felt like I got a good feel for both, but sadly found them a bit undersized for my needs and taste.

For another, I’m already committed to the Opinel challenge for March.

I currently only own 3 SAK's and a Sportsman is one of them. I'd be down to participate.

Was not familiar with the SPORTSMAN variant!

Had completed the 84mm (‘tween) Challenge in 2023 and do not recall this model mentioned.

So following at this point, as I am committed to the OPINEL challenge in March.  Actually more INVESTED as several models now part of my  knife box. 😜
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

A couple of people used one during that very challenge. I also did the whole challenge with mine... https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,90682.msg2419874.html#msg2419874

I stand corrected🙃☺️

Thank you , Tasky

I think the red scales threw me!

Is the Sportsman unique  because of the corkscrew and  nail file blade instead of a Phillips and Pen blade?

I'd do it!   I love the Sportsman and keep one in my cars.  Count me in.

Can we select a different month? As it was mentioned, there is Opinel challenge in March…

I’m not quite clear on what you’re asking.

To my way of thinking, the most closely related knives to the Sportsman are the Tourist (which has all the same tools, except has the small blade in place of the Sportsman’s file) and the Cadet (which has all the same front side tools as the Sportsman, but of course no back side or scale tools).

I suppose if we converted your question to a statement:  The Sportsman is unique  because of the corkscrew and nail file blade instead of a Phillips and Pen blade.

Then I could answer Jeopardy-style and say “What is the difference between the Tinker Small and the Sportsman?”
:-P

Yep, was curious if I describe the big difference from the Tinker 84mm?

There are so many variations of the  SAKs, most are only different by the back side, Corkscrew or a Phillips.
I noticed that the Sportsman also uses a nail file and not a Pen Blade.
Is there any other differences?
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

You’re correct.  The Sportsman has the nail file in place of the 84mm Tinker’s small blade, and corkscrew in place of the backside Phillips.  No other differences.

Absolutely!

I wasn’t aware of the conflict with the Opinel challenge.

What about April or May? Would that work better for most folks?

I will probably participate, though I may wimp out and not post every day (I don't bother about the badges). Later works better for me.

This might be fun and a good reason to get a new sportsman with the new file. I carried mine for I don't know how many years. Got one as a kid and had it until I was a teenager and then a couple more years when I had my first doughter

Looks like April is pretty open at this point. How would everyone feel about that?

I was going to do the opposite - I only have a Sportsman with the new file so I was going to hit the big auction site for a pre-owned model with the older style file for comparison.

Alright, hearing no objections, I have asked SteveC to add the Sportsman Challenge to the schedule for April since there were no other challenges that month (and plenty of them in the following months...).

So, let's do sign ups!

I pulled my Sportsman out since we were talking about it.  My word, this one that I have is a snappy little devil! Every tool delivers a crisp, loud snap!  I think I may have oiled this when I went through an orgy of oiling SAKs a few months back.  I've had this for a couple years but somehow I never really used this knife much.  I do use a Cadet a lot for filing my nails and this is pretty much the same, just a little thicker.

You still should request the mods to change the threads title from  MAYBE to APRIL.

This will help those interested from reading the thread to determine when if they are inquiring.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I am doing Opinel challenge in March so I will join here in April too. The only sad thing about challenges is that you cannot carry the rest of the knives in your collection. However with Sportsman challenge I can still be active in the outdoor thread :)
