Still a nice score!

Soak 12-24 hrs in sudsy water (dish soap/"Dawn"+water); attempt to move implements so that the suds percolate between grime and spring bars. If it does not work, rinse, dry thoroughly, apply WD40 liberaly (would not soak as it can harm the graphics of the nylon scales) and let it soak with occcasional attempts to free implements. This "recipe" has worked for me in all but the most corroded liners/implements without the need to disassemble. Good luck, as it looks like a nice Spartan/Tinker! :tu:

That is really nice m47mu74nt. :o Legendary world cup. One of the best. So many memorable matches and great players.

Hope you are able to get it back in good working order. Do be careful to preserve the prints on it. :o

Thank you. I have a special love for the 74s. When I saw this beauty up for sale I didn't hesitate. Maybe I'll carry it to a wedding or something one day.

Got my first back layer Phillips - in form of a 20 USD (Skr equivalent) circa 1986-1991 Fisherman.

Tools were in perfect shape and after a spa bath I polished the scales lightly.

I picked up this NOS Explorer on the big bay site back in February. It has the grey magnifier, the crossbow stamp on the blade tang, and factory edges that were actually fairly sharp. There’s no pin hole in the back scale; does that mean the scales are solid?

In clearing out a deceased relative's house we found some old knives in varying states of repair. I cleaned and sharpened a handful of Spartans for my cousins (and replaced cracked scales with some I had on hand) and sent an old cross Farmer to Victorinox to refurbish. It came back with everything but the scales replaced! They offered to replace the scales, but they would have used the current silver with the current logo and I preferred to keep the old cross. Looking closely at the old tools that they returned to me, the original saw was still in perfect shape. The blade and bottle opener needed to be replaced and the awl was bent so it rubbed against the knife blade. The key ring had been cut off, too.

Very nice. I'm putting one of these (from about this era) together with some help from a forum legend ;0) Had most parts but not the eyeless awl/spring. Will post when complete.

Arrived today.

It feels by far more difficult to date Wenger: s than Victorinox. When looking at pictures on the net - at Wenger: s from this era that has got box and papers it seems the last two digits in the serial might point to the year. In this case 1978.

The box says "1 28 00" and it is the model Champ - but according to Wenger codes it should say 1 28 02 - as it has tweezers and tothpick. It does not have a key ring holder (that would make it a 1 28 03 - together with the tweezer/tothpick). The seller was not a collector or interested in SAK - which makes me believe the knife came in this box.

Compared with my brothers of the same model - but a "03" as it has a chain ring holder. Another difference is mine has got the five-turn corkscrew whilst his got a four-turn.
