Alox Mini Champ Spydernox
on: February 15, 2024, 03:03:57 PM
Just finished this one up yesterday.  Started with a Alox Mini Champ, I gave in and decided to give the Spyderco Honeybee blade a chance, even though it's blade material is inferior to the Japanese made Spyderco Ladybug blade.  The Honeybee blade is also almost half the thickness of the Ladybug blade and almost the same thickness of the 58mm Victorinox blade (the Honeybee blade is just a hair thicker than the Vic blade).  Anyways, I also added a layer of brass and cut a slot into it to accept a tweezer.  For the tweezer, I ended up using a large tweezer for 91mm SAK's.  The plastic part of the small tweezer just wasn't fitting well the Alox scale.  I did re-profile the large tweezer to match the radius of the Alox scale.  With the brass layer and Alox scale, it's just about the same thickness of a cellidor scale. The ruler was turned into a wood saw, didn't even have to sand out the measurement markings, as the acid etch took them out.  All the tools were acid etched using Ferric Chloride, I was going to give the tools a brass wash after the acid etching, but decided not to, since I was really liking the contrast with the scales and straight black tools.

Very classy way to add the tweezers to alox, let us know if you determine the Honeybee as passable in use.

Thank you for the kind words!  I'm guessing the Honeybee blade will be fine, just may not hold it's edge as well as the VG10 that's on the Ladybug blade, but we'll see.

The Alox and black tools look real good together.  I like what you did with the brass liner to house the tweezers.  I didn't used to be a fan of Alox but the more I see it, the more I like it.

Well done!  :hatsoff:

Wonderful job! Did you drill out the pins and then re-peen them…and somehow manage to keep those scales looking so good?

Yes, I did drill out the pins and then made new ones.  I cut the new pins to length, peened one side, then assembled the knife.  Then I put painters tape on the side that I already peened the pins on.  Used wire cutters to clip off the excess on the other side and carefully started the peening process.

If you guys would like to see a video of this build, I just posted it on my YouTube channel.  I made the YouTube channel when you guys requested a video of the internal storage mod I did on one my my builds and have just been making videos of all my builds and posting them on YouTube.  Gonna give this YouTube thing a go, enjoy!

Just watched the video  :like:.  The honeybee blade looks awesome on the MC.  The saw mod is also a nice touch.
