April Rebar and Friends Challenge
on: February 18, 2024, 05:31:49 AM
My wife and I will be closing on a house at the end of March, which means I'm sure I'll be fixing a million and one things in April. I want to carry something a little heavier than my usual SAK to help out. The Supertool 300 is my usual fix-it-carry, but that's too much to take to work in my slacks. Enter the Rebar, which fits fine. It'll be exciting to see how well it lives up to its big brother's reputation. To make it easier to participate, I figure anything else in the "modern-old-school" line (Bond, ST300, Knifeless Rebar) should also be fair game for people, but my goal will be to stick to the Rebar. Who's in?

Congratulations on a new house and plans to create a new home!

Rebar is a favorite of mine, and have three that see duty.

April, is also the MICRA Challenge, and I signed up for it.

But, I will  follow along. 👍
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Count me in. It has been a few years since I carried a Rebar regularly. It will be fun getting reacquainted with it.

Sounds like a good challenge but I don't think the ST300 is in the same class. Kick, Fuse and Blast perhaps would be better as "friends"  :tu:

ST300 is a good bit heftier than the Rebar, but the toolset is nearly same. The Bond, Rebars, and ST300 are clearly all from the same lineage, representing LM's current take on the original PST and ST. The Blast/Fuse/Kick (and Core) line are, in my estimation, their own thing, in the same way that the Wave/Curl/Charge line is.

Thoughts, instead of Rebar and friends, a new twist could be a “Big Brother Little Brother” Challenge.

A PST was first, the SOG Super Tool followed.

The SuperTool200 and Pulse both share the LOCKS UP release feature.

The SuperTool300 with its lock released was followed by the REBAR., with similar tool set.

All three combinations store the implements inside the handles.

The challenge could be to use the same featured tools in unison.

I know, that was my approach to MTs in construction, the ST300 road my belt first, and afterwards when doing heavy work.  The REBAR was acquired later and was utilized on lighter duty days, as repair and Preventive Maintenance Days, as well at home on weekends chores.

A new badge could even be requested as there is already a REBAR BADGE, and a SuperTool300 badge.

Just throwing the idea out there for YOUR consideration.  :salute:

BB/LB would be fun, if people want to do it. I was less concerned with the specific badges and more with having an opportunity to carry a tool that's mostly been a shelf queen since I got it.

I try is your challenge !

I already have ST300 and Rebar badges.

Until I purchased my first PST, did I begin to associate relationship of models by tool set and size.

And, to create controversy, I relate the Wave as a little SISTER to BIG SISTER the Surge😁

Those gentle curves. Does that make the Vic Spirit the va-va-voom foreign cousin with those handles?

I carry the Rebar almost daily and use it a lot, especially at work. Mine is modded to include a Wave's bit exchanger. It really improves the capability of the tool. Of course you can carry the LM accessory bit holder that fits on the philips screwdriver, but I like to have the bit exchanger because it holds my volty switch. That way even if I don't carry bits I'm not missing anything and I have the amazing volty with me.

If there will be a challenge, I'm in.

I carry the Rebar almost daily; and the Rebar was my first badge; yet it is tempting to do another Rebar challenge!
I am also thinking of the Micra challenge in May, as well.

Could step up to the ST300. Might be fun to see how it's different to carry the "big brother."

Took the Rebar out for a test carry today. My buddy is in charge of stage crew at a high school, and he needed a little help getting things together for the show tonight. Mostly wire cutters to snip zip ties and "prune" some fake trees.

I am a big fan of the ST300 but I've never cared for the Rebar.  I will consider my options before committing to this challenge.

Can I toss half a bond on a curl? It would be 3/4 old school at that point but I don’t think I’d be able to give up my pocket knife and not have an easy open blade with my work.

Alan,

I moved the saw next to the plain blade and then swapped out one small screwdriver, the lanyard, and (probably) a washer or two. This allowed me to install a Wave's bit exchanger in my Rebar. Yes, I could use the adapter but I discovered I love having this LM set up like this.. It also allows me to have a Volty Switch along for the ride. With that small mod, my Rebar went from "Eh....." to potential daily carry status. Just fyi, something you may want to consider.

Mod the handles together? I won't stop you, but I have no idea how well they fit together.

Can we get a sign up counter going? Need to see if we're close enough to 10 to worry about rules and badges, or lower in which case this can just be a chance for people to pick up LM badges they haven't gotten yet.

If we go w/ Big Bro/Little Bro it would be any "larger" and "smaller" LM from the same generation/family.

Off the top of my head:

1. Minitool<PST(II) (Sideclip and Flair?)<ST
2. Curl/Wave/Charge<Surge
3. Pulse<ST200
4. Kick/Fuse/Blast<Core
5. Bond/Rebar<ST300

I guess the P4 is technically bigger than the P2, but not by as much as the others. Likewise, unsure where the Micra fits in. I guess with the Minitool.
I'm sure I missed a few, but I think that covers all the common models at least. Variants/special editions go with their "normal" model (Darkside, knifeless, etc.).

If we don't have enough for a badge, I'll be mostly carrying the Rebar, and would be happy to just give people a chance to "make up" badges they missed that aren't run super often.

Excited for the unboxing, Harley!

Day 0

Got the family together for a nice Easter pic. The Rebar will be my main carry for the month, but I'm sure the ST300 and Bond will get some time as well. Rebar has been hard at work this week helping get settled at the new house, and done very well for itself.
