Unusual Victorinox Fisherman
on: February 19, 2024, 05:17:22 PM
This relates to the 'Strange Victorinox Fisherman special model' thread, which suggested I should consider starting a new thread as it was getting a bit old.

Anyway, I'm after a bit of identification and ageing advice for an acquaintance in the UK. I have had a dig around in the identification resources and SAKWIKI but couldn't find this exact model.

I've got as far as thinking it's some early version of a Victorinox Fisherman with a long nail file with Cellidor scales from around 1960. Can anybody offer any advice on this model?

I'm not any kind of expert. My notes are:

Red Cellidor scales. Were early Fisherman blue? Is Cellidor Celluloid and degasses?
Long nail file back tool
Original awl/reamer cross section
Four turn, split spiral corkscrew. Mangled tip though.
Small clip point blade
Fish scaler, no ruler
Metal tipped scale tool
PAT on the tin opener
Screwed pivot on the scissors with missing spring
Exposed pivot , missing bail

Thanks for any input.

That looks like a Champion (Corkscrew) LNF from the late 1950s with the saw layer collapsed. Victorinox used full height liners back in those days so the saw blends into them really well.

I figured that our friend Taschenmesser would know whether or not the pretty knife had a saw, but maybe not?  I see where someone else owns the knife.  It does look exactly like the old Champion.  The saw is missing, or maybe just not opened.  Other models than fishing types had fish scalers, of course.
Was there a cellidor question?  I think there have been some minor formulation adjustments through the years, but it is Tenite.  You might find some answers about it by looking for Tenite characteristics or manufacture.  Best wishes.  G

Thanks for your comments. I have not physically seen the knife just the photograph, so I have posed the question about the saw and asked for a photograph showing the layers from above.

Ta da, the simplest questions are the best and the answer is normally the simplest. Yes it has a saw.

I was just excited for a while.

You friend still has a great old knife.  It cost about $21 here back in the day.  You could have bought about three good CASE knives for that.  Best wishes.  Gary

I guess it would be quite easy to clean and replace the scissor spring.

Fixing the corkscrew could be risky. Not sure if a bail can be added.

Maybe worth sending to Victorinox for repair.

Is it rude to ask an indicative value on here? $100 -$150?

Dollar figure?  I don't have any opinion.  I will say that sending it back to Victorinox for repairs would enhance the value and appearance greatly.  Best wishes.  Gary

I did a quick search on FleaBay and I found two that were sold this year.  Both near or at the $100 range.  Both with the squared off Phillips instead of the corkscrew.  Might help give you a value.

I said as much to SAKTaschenmesser privately -- "You even managed to coax Jazzbass out of hiding!"

And delivered the punchline with perfect timing.

Look at this valuable, vintage, rare, Fisherman? You mean a Champion with the saw closed.

Comedy gold.
