Titanium Dice
on: February 11, 2009, 04:04:16 AM
Not sure if this goes here or in the Break Room.. please move if it is wrong for this forum.

I was looking around today for some new dice. I like to carry a set on me to play simple dice games and pass the time. So many games you can play with a set of dice, from drinking with friends, to sitting waiting for the bus. A good set of 9 is very compact and easy to carry. I'd say equal to a deck of playing cards in terms of game variety and space in the pocket or bag, and probably more durable.

I am talking about the normal 6 sided variety BTW, not the strange gamer dice.

Anyway, I found this image:

Wow!

I would love to have a set of those! Titanium dice would be the ultimate EDC!

So I guess my questions are:

Does anyone here have the ability to make Ti dice? Does anyone else here EDC dice? If so, what games are you playing? I think dice can be beautiful, can I see a pic of yours? Any special ones you like?

Oh, and this site has some bitchen dice available to look at or buy: http://www.thegamestore.com/Dice_Dice_Games_Dice_Bags_Game_Parts_s/5.htm

I am thinking of getting the "Lime Glow In the Dark", "Pink Elephant", "Beetle", and "Fish" to add to my rotation.

Currently I am carrying an old set of small ivory (fake) dice from a 1950's Aggravation game. I like the vintage plastic ones a lot.

If I can get my hands on some titianium square bar stock I'm sure I can make that with my belt sander and drill press, but I have no idea where to get such a thing.

Dave Reynolds (Dave22) made the dice pictured.  I used to be a moderator in his forum (on the USN), but sadly he closed his forum and he will no longer be making the dice. :(

I get goodies from em too once in a while. I smoke and used to send in Miles all the time till they stoped the program. They also send ya stuff if you ever let someone scan your ID for a free zippo in a bar.

I was the other moderator of Dave22's forum, along with Gadget Guy.  I always had the chance the purchase these, but never did.  Just couldn't find a good reason to buy them.  Just not a dice guy.  But they were really cool!

Nope, but I got a milling machine and a bunch of titanium. Think I might give it a go this weekend. :)

Ah!

-clapping hands excitedly like a "challenged" person-

You know, I wondered how one would ensure that the sides with more pips would not turn out lighter than the sides with less? Do you suppose the sides with less will need to be drilled deep while the sides with more will need to be drilled shallow? Not being an engineer or machinist, I have no clue how this would be accomplished to ensure that the dice are weighted evenly for use.

Or perhaps it is such a slight difference that it does not matter?

I will say that if you can manage this in a 12mm (standard dice are 16mm) size I would be extremely interested in a set of seven depending on cost. Heck, I would be interested in a set of 16s for that matter, though 12mm are easier to EDC.

I did find some gamer geek dice that are "metal" but it is mystery metal. And they do offer a standard 6 sided pipped 12mm in brass, copper, and chrome finishes. I hate dice with numerals instead of pips.

So not Ti, but cool nonetheless. There is a brushed steel version I have seen too, though not reflected on the website for some reason.
