Ford Pinto DIY Key
on: May 11, 2024, 02:58:00 AM
I recently rediscovered this little curiosity and figured I'd share it. It was a promotional item intended to help owners perform basic maintenance on their Pintos. It features screwdriver tips, a small ruler, spark plug gap gauges, and what looks a lot like the wire bender notch on a Victorinox cap lifter. This one has seen some use. There used to be a nice unused one somewhere in my house, but it seems to have disappeared.

That's pretty neat.  Never seen one of those before.

There must be some Ford Pintos and Chevy Vegas out there somewhere.  I haven't seen either in years.  My pal Ricky had a Vega in his front yard and a 327 motor wrapped in plastic on his Mom's porch.  Back in the '70s.  It sat there for quite a while.  One day I walked over and said, "How is the Vega coming?"  He said, "This piece of smurf is never going to run."  Then in anger he hauled off and kicked the door.  Naturally it caved in.  He saw what he had done and a tear ran down his face.  Dreams die hard.
Best wishes.  G

It has been a very long time since I've seen a Vega. A Pinto sighting was more recent, but even that was over seven years ago. I intended to ask if the Pinto languishing in a driveway in Fresno, CA was for sale, but never did.

Incidentally, I spotted an M151 yesterday. I've only seen one other.

Mom had a green Vega when I was a kid. It was pretty cool until Dad decided to paint it an ugly beige and convert it to automatic.

Converting a manual to an automatic is not something I would do. Converting an automatic to manual? Absolutely!

Agreed. I don't know what Dad was thinking. Even Mom raised an eyebrow at that idea.

Ever since my wife and I met, we've always had at least one stick shift in our fleet and we're making sure both kids know how to drive one

Nice, thanks for sharing! Don't worry, Chako'll be coming along shortly with some pics of the keys in his collection.
