I know several members here have one of those and couldn’t find a club associated to this beautifully unique tool.
Below is the information I have related to my specific tool, but I’d love to hear other stories about this release in general or even barrel down of some of the Gold PST’s other users have.
I’ll go first:
// Leatherman 10th Anniversary Gold PST
“In celebration of their 10th anniversary in 1993, Leatherman made 200 gold Pocket Survival Tools and gave them to their very best dealers and distributors as gifts. These were presented mounted on a plaque and came with a certificate of authenticity.
#154 / 200 was presented to a cutlery company called ‘Moteng.'
Moteng was founded in Los Angeles in 1980 as an importer of South African tapestries, then specialized in distributing outdoor consumer goods like Maglite and Leatherman. They moved to San Diego in 1984.
Moteng’s strength as a distributor grew very quickly in the 1990’s and 2000’s. They added hundreds of brands in that time and put out massive catalogs for their dealers. They specialized in knives, flashlights and branched out into many other diverse categories. They acquired a skateboard distributor, Rax, and the walls of their several growing offices were filled with many gifts from various retailers like this gold PST from the Leatherman Tool Group.
The growth of the company stopped in the late 2000’s as their core customers, brick-and-mortar shops, started closing their doors due to e-commerce. Moteng had financial troubles during this period and was sold to several owners since. Sportsman’s Supply of Fenton, MO, a distributor of hunting and fishing goods, acquired Moteng in 2017, and no longer uses the Moteng name. In 2021, it closed its San Diego office, and many of the awards on the walls were sold to its dealers.
White Mountain Knives, one of their dealers, received and subsequently sold this gold PST in 2021 to a private buyer.“
