A selection of Roxon Gear and my thoughts on it.
on: May 27, 2024, 04:20:10 AM
Roxon first came onto my radar after reading another member posting about it. What caught my attention was the Phantom with its super easy blade exchange. Seeing how I love utility knives for this feature, the Phantom spoke to me in a big way. I then thought I should start to slowly gather a few more Roxon items as time rolls on for my collection, which sees me writing this today. In this short article, I shall post a few photos and comments about my thoughts on each piece I currently own from the Roxon stable. I hope a few of you may find this informative.

1. Roxon Phantom S802S.

As I mentioned before, I was excited about the blade changing capabilities of the Phantom. I quickly ordered one and tried very hard to get my expctations lowered as I had never heard of Roxon until someone in here mentioned them. When I ordered the Phantom, I scoured Amazon.ca for every knife blade I could find. These blades come in 3 packs and I think I have them all except for one blade (BA01). While trying to score the S502U Phantom system companion knife, I stumbled upon 6 newer blade offerings. This makes the total number or different blades to 17.

The blades exchange super easy by moving 2 little button levers. To sweeten the pot, Roxon even includes a utility blade as one of the options available. I was already sold on the concept.

Once I got the Phantom home, I was very impressed with the build quality. The Phantom is one of my favourite multi-tools out on the market today.

The included sheath is fairly good.

20240526_203656 by Chako, on Flickr

Switching blades is as easy as moving those 2 button levers upwards, poping the now loose handle off, replacing the blade, and reversing the process to lock everything up. Just be sure to press the handle down to lock it in place as the liner lock does give you a bit of resistance.

20240526_203715 by Chako, on Flickr

The Phantom is one of those designs that not only manages to cram in pliers, and a good sized knife blade, but also a very generous pair of scissors.

20240526_203853 by Chako, on Flickr

The Phantom comes with a Tanto blade (BA02) as standard. Here you can see the handle side removed as well as the blade, ready for replacement.

20240526_203950 by Chako, on Flickr

As I have mentioned before, there are 17 blades for the system, of which I currently have 16. You could purchase several copies of your favourite blade, never needing to worry about wrecking a blade, as replacing them is fairly easy. The blades come in a protective clear plastic protective sheath that feature magnets to keep them together for storage purposes. Each protective blade sheath feature a locking mechanism. The system is well thought out.

20240519_183321 by Chako, on Flickr

20240519_185206 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Easy blade exchange that really adds a lot to the functionality of the Phantom.
- Good build quality.
- 17 different blade additions.
- Nice size pliers, knife, and scissors.
- Sheath quality is good.
- Some of the newer accessories are not knives, making this tool friendlier in tough knife law areas and possibly flight safer.

Cons:
- A bit bulky.
- No bit set and adaptor included (No storage space in sheath for one either).

Overall, this is an impressive system that simplifies the blade exchange over many other competitors. The blades are nice, thick and robust. The quality is fairly good. The scissors are large and work great, as does the knife system. Some of the newer additions to the system are not blades, allowing you to remove the blade in areas that are knife tough. In my opinion, the Roxon Phantom is a winner. This is one of my favourite designes currently out there.

2. Roxon Spark CM1349.

Based on its model name, you would be correct in assuming this multi-tool features a fire steel. It is one of those survival whistle/fire steel combinations that slide out of the tool. I think this is one of their older offerings as it looks a bit different from their other offerings. The included sheath is of lesser quality than that featured with the Phantom.

20240526_203306 by Chako, on Flickr

The Spark is a nice looking multi-tool that features an all black presence with very nice texturing.

20240526_203331 by Chako, on Flickr

The included knife is a nice size. Lacking in this design are scissors. Mind you, for an outdoor survival type multi-tool, scissors might be considered of limited value. As mentioned before, you do get an emergency whistle and fire steel.

20240526_203531 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Combo whistle and fire steel.
- The texture is great for gripping.

Cons:
- Quality appears to be less than that found on the Phantom.
- Non replaceable wire cutters.

Overall, a not that bad outdoor activities multi-tool let down by the quality of the included sheath.

3. Roxon MBT3 S601.

In the realm of BBQ multi-tools, Roxon's offering is a very interesting and massive inclusion. This is a fairly big tool to begin with that only gets larger once the handles are fully deployed. The nice thing about this huge multi are the equally huge tools. A knife that is large enough to cut a roast. The include spatula and fork can attach and become a good sized salad tongs.

20240526_204229 by Chako, on Flickr

Included with the MBT3 is a knife, BBQ spatula, BBQ fork, corkscrew, and bottle opener.

20240526_204259 by Chako, on Flickr

The BBQ fork and spatula come apart from the central knife carrier. Both attach to form tongs.

20240526_204521 by Chako, on Flickr

20240526_204621 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- A good size that should keep you safe from BBQ flames and grease splatters.
- The blade is massive.
- The tool does a neat transformer trick to give you tongs.,

Cons:
- I can't think of any. I have used these a few times and have no complaints.

Overall, the MBT3 offers a rather unique design for BBQing.

4. Roxon K5 S501.

This is a knife that also offers a full pair of scissors. As such it is rather simple in its functionality compared to more complicated multi-tools. With that said, I know plenty of people who carry a knife. The addition of scissors is a big plus.

Pros:
- Good size knife and scissors.
- Simple in design that does not take up much space.

Cons:
- No included sheath, relying on the included belt clip.

Overall, this is a good design for those who primarily carry a knife but want the added functionality of scissors. The quality of this tool is equal to the Phantom mentioned above.

5. Roxon KS2.

Here is another Roxon that does not feature pliers. The KS2 does have a good pair of scissors and a knife blade. Included with the tool is a pair of tweezers.

The KS5 comes in one of those little cloth bags that I find annoying, The presentation is great but the struggle to take the tool out of the tight little enclosure is real. It does a good job of protecting the tool, but I would ditch it if I ever decide to EDC it.

20240526_202730 by Chako, on Flickr

The KS5 included a pocket clip.

20240526_202808 by Chako, on Flickr

There is a side lever that pushes most of the smaller tools outwards as they fit flush to the sides when stored away.

20240526_202952 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Well made.
- Good sized scissors.
- Tweezers stored in the scissor handle.

Cons:
- Blocky ergonomics.

Overall, the Roxon KS5 offers a lot of functionality in a smaller package. The fit and finish of the tool is fairly high. I do find using the sliding button on the side to access the secondary tools to be a bit of a pain. I would rather have individual nail nicks and slighly protruding tools myself. With that said, there shouldn't be anything to catch inside a pocket.

6. Roxon Bits Group BITS01.

I was not aware of this small useful addition until fairly recently. I did not know you could buy this seperately as I had previously seen this included with some of their other offerings. The Bits Group is ideal for smaller jobs.

20240526_202630 by Chako, on Flickr

9 bits and the adaptor is included in a nice branded carrier,.

20240526_202651 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Adaptor offers a nice tight fit to the Philips driver on most smaller Roxon multi-tools.

Cons:
- If bought as an accessory, quite often no place to store it with the Roxon multi-tool.

I have one of their pocket knives were you can change the blade. It seems they have added more blades and tool choices since then.

7. Roxon M4.

I bought 2 of these with the intent of replacing my Swiss+Tech nailclipper that hangs on my keychain. The second one would be a hanger queen in my collection. I also bought the Bits Group kit to add a little range to the M4. Ultimately, I found the M4 to be too large to hang off of my keychain. I dislike the Swiss+Tech nailclipper due to the overly sharp metal that folds over the handle locking in closed. It gets in my eye something fierce. The nailclipper on the M4 is much more ergonomic and easier to use.

Once again, you get the struggle protective bag.

20240526_202256 by Chako, on Flickr

The M4 is very classy with its leather handle panels.

20240526_202317 by Chako, on Flickr

This nailclipper is far superior to my other one. It is a shame the M4 is rathe thick and blocky.

20240526_202344 by Chako, on Flickr

The tool selection makes the M4 a very good nail grooming kit.

20240526_202449 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Leather trim.
- Great nailcliper.

Cons:
- Fiddly half hiden rotating lever on one end of the tool will allow you to extract secondary tools as they sit flush with the handles.

Overall, I quite like the M4's utility if not the shape.

8. Roxon M3.

The M3 is an interesting tool. It is mosly scissor based with an included knife blade, along with a few other features. I find this one a little intriguing because there are a few hidden treats centered around the folding scissor handle. Hidden there are a set of tweezers, a toothpick, and a double sided small screwdriver. Extracting the driver bit is done with a black sliding lever that pushes it out. It took me a while to figure that the matching octagonal hole in the handle is the screwdriver part. In fact, I did not know the bit was double ended and just assumed the driver bit was extended out and you just used it that way. I was wrong. You have to pull out the bit and install it in the correct hole for use.

At least  you get a cute sheath with the Bits Group added for good measure. There is a seperate pocket to store it behind the tool,

20240526_201558 by Chako, on Flickr

20240526_201622 by Chako, on Flickr

There is a bautiful file section found on the outside of one of the handles.

20240526_201656 by Chako, on Flickr

All tools lock in place.

20240526_201757 by Chako, on Flickr

Here you can see where the toothpick, tweezers, and bit storage is. Slide the outside lever will extend the double ended bit out. The actual screwdriver part is the hole found north of the bit storage hole.

20240526_201938 by Chako, on Flickr

20240526_202021 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Good quality fit and finish.
- Good attention to detail such as the toothpick stored in a somewhat open air reservoir to dry it out.
- Scissors work very well.

Cons:
- None that comes to mind other than the little bit driver being a nice hidden feature.

Overall, I quite like this one. It is not often that I have trouble figuring a tools feature set without looking at the instructions.

9. Roxon M2.

If the M3 lacking plyers is a problem, the M2 should fit the bill if you are in the market for a smaller multi-tool. Once again come in a nice dual compartment sheath with the Bits Groups included.

20240526_201204 by Chako, on Flickr

The M2 is shapped like a mini Phantom.

20240526_201230 by Chako, on Flickr

You get pliers, scissors, and a knife blade. Oddly enough, no tweezers.

20240526_201410 by Chako, on Flickr

Instead of tweezers, you do get a glass breaker.

20240526_201448 by Chako, on Flickr

Included is a nice pocket clip,

20240526_201456 by Chako, on Flickr

Pros:
- Smaller sized feature rich plier based multi-tool.
- Glass breaker function.
- Scissors are of a good size for the tool.

Cons:
- I can't think of one other than the pliers are a little on the smaller side.

Overall, the M2 is a smaller feature rich multi-tool that includes the Bits Group kit.

In conclusion, Roxon pleasantly surprised me on the quality front time and time again. I do not have everything they have produced, but I am working on that. Here is a group photo of all the products I mentioned in this thread.

Vidar, I am still looking for that one on Amazon.ca.

I'm pretty sure I bought it from one of the Roxon stores on Aliexpress. They don't have it in stock either it seems. If memory serves they had two different handle designs? I bought the most civil looking one, a Phantasy S502 with some extra blades for my design reference collection.  Came with a small textile pouch - I assume to keep extra blades in.

It is quite lightweight, yet sturdy, and has a liner lock. And a pocket clip which seems reassuringly sturdy.

Edit: The pouch might have come with the extra blades. I don't see how to fit it back into the knife packing. (Then again I have it from the great authority that I live with that my packing skills are severely lacking).

Another edit: Roxon Store actually have several hundreds in stock, but they refuse to send to my location... Now this postal censorship in some countries is becoming annoying. To most Chinese shops Europe is just Europe, and whatever trouble they have sending one place usually transfers elsewhere whether the same goes there or not. Your luck with Canada might vary though.

Thus far, I have restricted my search to Amazon only, It might be time to search further afield. Yes, it is the Phantasy I have been looking for to go with the Phantom. I did notice Roxon mentioned a new model called the Flex. It appears you buy the empty frame and then buy each implement seperately until you have a very expensive but custom tool loadout.

The last Roxon I got was the KS with replaceable blades. The next one will be the Flex for me. The M2 looks interesting though.

I'm really impressed with Roxon, they have developed their line of tools so much, always pushing the envelope.  :D

When it comes to AliExpress I've learned to pay attention to the shops percentage of positive reviews and followers. On average about 4-5% of orders have something or another going bump in the night. The chances of something going bump seems far less with shops with high rating (say 97% upwards) and many followers (so the percentage is real).

Roxon BBQ Tool set arrived today.  It is a nice heavy solid set.  Really clever locking design.  Each tool in the set is solid, well-built and feel high quality stuff.
The knife is massive indeed, and very sharp.  Glad to own it. Will start using the new BBQ tool from next BBQ.
