30 Scouts in 30 Days: Day 14

Kabar and Case, twins separated at birth? Both of these scouts were probably made by Camillus. Of the two, the Case is nicer, IMO, and has a smoother action. Hard to make a real call with a sample size of one, though. Both are among the best made and best looking scouts in my collection.

I don't anticipate any use today, so I'm pondering why the cap lifter is so much larger than the can opener.
I’d guess it’s to give the flat screwdriver a bit of extra reach.

Very nice!!

Day 14

I have to agree with Nate on the extra reach for the flat head.  Used mine to pop open some oil for an oil change before our trip this weekend.

The little Buck Trads are so nice.  It seems Buck is really known for their 110 and 112, but they make so many other nice knives
I have had Buck Vantage Pro for couple of years and I love it. But it is a modern knife. I started liking these old fashioned ones recently and have to say they are really nice and handy. This Stockman will have brother soon :)

Day 15

A very nice way to celebrate the half way mark is surely with a new knife arriving.  :D  Arthur Wright custom piece; Senator pattern with Oak covers and Wharncliffe blade.

30 Scouts in 30 Days: Day 15

This Clover Brand (possibly another Camillus) was made in Syracuse, NY. It has another old fashioned "upside down" can opener, but I really like this one. The jimping at the top is a thumb rest, and the cut out at the bottom (where you'd probably see a wire stripper today) sits on the rim. Unlike a modern hook, it doesn't have to catch, it just sits. Real easy action. Like most old openers, it does have trouble on the initial puncture, which might be better performed with the awl.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I started on the left, then did the right half once I got the technique down. Honestly, possibly the best knife can opener I've ever used, after the initial punch. I didn't use the awl, since it requires you to open the other tools and fish it out.

I suspect the wood scales (which are very nice) are aftermarket, since there's a notch cut in the liner, but not the scale. That or I got some kind of weird factory mess up from 100 years ago.

All tools still in decent shape. The blade even has a bit of an edge, and isn't ground down like they often are on these older knives. I might try to put a notch in the scales, clean and sharpen it a bit and actually carry it sometimes. It's a real nice little knife.

My younger son splintered the end of one of his toy crossbow bolts.  I attempted to get rid of the splintering while saving as much of the bolt as possible and preserving its functionality.

This Case 18 pattern stockman with S35VN steel is one of my desk knives.

More package duty.  The Case 18 pattern helped free this rather interesting (and rather large) German-made A.G. Russell  Muskrat(?) from its shipping envelope.

Errr I cannot add pictures via tap talk??? Can anyone recommend a different way?

Have pillaged an opinel photo from a past post...

DAY 15

The opinel collection, the strange handle shape on one of the number 8's is down to me trying to add a brass lanyard tube, the drill went off center, and just had to reshape....it turned out okay.

Being brought up on a farm, I rotated three one no 7, and two no 8, those three opinels were my only cutting blades for 6 years, and did everything with them.

Day 16

Here's an interesting one.  Made in France by Bargeon it's a quality knife that has had a tough life (blade warped and attacked by a grinder at sometime in its life).  However it remains very usable.
