Luke's Wenger Collection for Badge Lvl 2 request
on: June 20, 2024, 03:57:24 PM
Hi guys,

I'm happy to show you my small Wenger collection. I have collected eight so far, so I should make it straight to Level II, hopefully. Here's an overview shot:

* IMG_0850.jpg (Filesize: 465.98 KB)

From left to right:
  • Traveler that was my first SAK. It belonged to my grandfather and was given to me when I was about eight years old.
  • Traveler. This is my user. I wanted a Traveler to carry occasionally for nostalgia. So I went out looking for one and bought No. 3 first. But because of its mint condition I couldn't get myself to peel off the protective film and carry it. That's why I got this one, which was also in pretty much unused condition, but with a badly scratched backside scale that I had to polish. This model unfortunately does not have scale tool slots.
  • Traveler in mint condition with original protective film and scale tools
  • Forester of later production, because it has already got the Victorinox style woodsaw that protrudes a little bit at the tip and does not feature a nail nick. Mint condition with scale tools. Came across on my hunt for a Traveler and I couldn't resist.
  • Commander or Basic(?) without scale tools. Also in new condition.
  • Soldier from 1988, my birth year
  • Standard Issue that I bought new in circa 2010 without date stamp.
  • Soldier from 1989 in mint condition with box that I just got this week.

Here are my three Travelers:

While we're at it: can anyone give me some information on my Commander or Basic model? There are two unusual things:

First is the shield. It's not the aluminum one or the white painted logo. It is engraved and filled with silver paint. It looks a little cheap because the color looks like it was applied with a silver sharpie by hand...

Second is the protrusions at the end of the scales. At first I thought they were damaged, but they're exactly the same on both sides. I recently saw another example on eBay with the same pattern. Maybe it's from the injection molding process?

Was there an economy version from Wenger? I am pretty sure that it is not a fake, because all the tools feel perfectly normal.

There was an economy line of Wengers. I lost all my documents with a computer crash so I forget what they were called. Bumps are most certainly casting sprues. Nice Wengers. Best wishes G

SAKWiki has the correct numbers for the Basic series of Wengers. Printed cross. No scale tools. Best wishes. G

Very nice set.
It seems you have a preference for scales with scales tools?

I always feel that celidor scales without scale tools are kind of lost opportunity. Alox is of course different story.

Thank you Gary! I've gone through the Wiki, however this cross is not printed, it's engraved and filled with silver paint. As I said, I haven't seen this very often. Here's a macro shot:

That's exactly my thought as well. I'm a big fan of the tweezers and the pen. I don't use the tweezers very often, but when I need them I am glad that I have them on me. I know for sure that when I'd carry no tweezers, it's almost certain that I'll catch a splinter or find a tick on my arm. That's why I always carry a 58mm when I'm carrying a model without scale tools.

Thanks guys for your compliments!  :hatsoff:

Best regards,
Luke

I think the shield is hot stamped and the silver thing is not a paint but foil applied during the hot stamp process.
Victorinox did the same thing. You are right that it looks a bit cheap.

The printed or stamped cross doesn't look too  bad when they are new. Carry them for a few weeks and it is a different story. They look bad when they start to wear off. Eventually there is just an outline.
The knives are as good as ever of course. Some of the advertising logos are done the same way. I have sanded some of the logos out that were stamped or printed and polished the scales. Best wishes. G

Maybe it's a dumb question, but since this is my first application for a badge: do I need to apply somewhere officially so it gets awarded? Or do I need to have a forum signature?

Since every thread is worthless without pics, here are the new Wenger additions to my collection. This was a crazy week and I'll share the whole story with you guys soon in the "Latest SAK" thread.
So these are two new in box 1989 Wenger Soldiers and a new Traveler. Yes, I already had the exact same 1989 NIB Soldier, but I had the opportunity to buy the remaining two knives for a bargain price. The Traveler was basically thrown in for free to sweeten the deal. But more on that soon.

Thank you!

I'm happy to have that badge now officially  :) I thought it would be cool to get this one as my first, because my first SAK was a Wenger, too. Although I like Victorinox a bit more, Wenger still has a special place in my heart!
