Good to have you aboard, Fireman! :woohoo:

And thank you for that warning. I worked at a warehouse that issued such things to employees. I never had much issue with them, but then again, I was more apt to use my SAK for anything other than cardboard. (Why that company handed you a whole new cutter instead of a replacement blade remains a mystery to me.)

Gerber makes several replaceable blade models that're going on some deep discounts for clearance at the various knife sites right now. Great time to pick something up if people still need something.

One of the few I've actually found myself wanting to use  regularly as an EDC has been this Klein

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Milwaukee had two versions--utility and a regular blade. Never bought them, as I didn't see them that much locally. Rural King recently got some in, but I found they had metal handles. Too heavy.  I found the Kleins at Lowe's earlier this year, and fell in love with them. Light, easy to change the blade, and a decent bit driver (unlike the tiny pry tool/SD on the Lenox Gold knives I keep twisting).

Also, the bit and adapter are impact rated. It's been in my drills and impacts a lot when I lost the regular bit.

Besides, I haven't done a challenge in ages.

Day 1
The beginning and the beginning of a new challenge.

Tajima LC-301. I bought the same model when I was a teen from Yaohan in 199x. It was the first better build cutter I have. The previously owned ones are cheap plastic ones.

This cutter I think I bought it a few years back just to fill the missing place in my heart when my original one I owned was lent to some classmate and never returned to me.

This model is made from stainless steel piece. It is a simple autolock model. And it has not changed at all over the years.
This one I have used a plier to reduce the opening play such that it has more precision when cutting small piece of paper and stickers etc.

Only difference is the plastic has changed from the higher quality refined look of grey to cheaper looking black and the brushed lines are less refined. The "stainless" letter stamping is missing as well. And the "blade snapper" stamping is off centre. I think that has to be result of moving production from Japan to China.

In my eye 199x was some kind of golden era of goodness of Hong Kong as well as a time Japan means high quality. Everything you see in Hong Kong from Japan, relates to high quality and robustness. Just like every good thing in life, once it's gone, it's gone forever.

Lossing this model is also my starting point of never ending journey of collecting utility cutters/knives. Because at the time of losing it, I did not remember the brand and model number of it.

Day 1

Gerber makes a number of replaceable blade knives, and I expect this month is going to be a mostly Gerber challenge. I've used these a little, so my initial impressions, top to bottom:

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Prybrid X: This is a light duty prybar with a craft blade attached. Gerber already tried that with the Artifact. Some people like that, but (even at a relatively small size) it feels kind of bulky relative to its function to me.

Prybrid Utility: Man, I wish I'd had this thing when we first bought the house. I don't know how many times I needed a little prybar or a utility knife that first month, and putting both of them on one tool would've been really convenient. I like how you can use the recessed blade to cut string, etc. Mine is the old version, but there's a newer one with a clip, which seems like a reasonable add on.

Lockdown Pry: I think this is going to be my daily driver this month. Regular knife, craft blade, chisel tip file, and a driver/prybar/bottle opener. Questionable OHO and pocket clip.

Lockdown Drive: Currently trying to get Gerber to warranty the pocket clip on this, which broke on its way out of the package. Doubly annoyed since I can't get the screws out. Did they locktite them or something? Why would you do that? Pretty sure I mangled the head on one of my bits trying to get them out. Swaps the scissors for a very knifish awl, and the pry thing for a bit driver. Like a lot of Gerber's small tool drivers, it's pretty happy to fold up on you. I want to like this more than the Pry (a full sized bit driver on a tool this size is great) but the execution makes me lean the other way.

I really wish Gerber would move production of one of their small multi lines over to the US. The Lockdowns, Armbars, and Dime are all neat little tools, but the quality isn't where it could be.

Day 1.

The Milwaukee Fastback was my companion over the past couple of days. It and the PST kept me company while I started a gravel path in the backyard. The Milwaukee will be my primary utility knife for the challenge.

Day 1;

Got rid of some cardboard while working on getting my basement storage straightened out. Cardboard+humidity doesn't mix. I mostly use a mix of the $10 27 gallon black and yellow; as well as the $5 Walmart Sterilite totes now.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I'm using Craftsman blades in this one. The Kleins seem to hold an edge longer, but I prefer the finer tip. Lenox blades beat everyone else in retention and toughness, but at the time, I was using the knife for craft stuff where the tip was needed.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-Carbon-Steel-3-4-in-Utility-Replacement-Blade-10-Pack/1000594355

Another reason I keep moving towards utililty knives for hard use (like most people I know) is the fact that blades are dirt cheap. Even good ones are less than fifty cents each, and there's 100 packs of cheap blades for like ten cents a blade.   I think the Stanley "carpenter's knives" (10-049) are like $3 a blade (plus the new non-USA blades suck--they don't hold an edge well and can't be resharpened well) and Outdoor Edge Razorlites about that as well. Havalons take scalpel blades, but I don't own one yet.

@kaevin: glad you found a replacement! I have a similar knife. Mrs. FX stuck it on a magnetic kitchen knife holder one day, and it's never left.

@ReamerPunch: those little button-looking deals on the handle remind me a little of the locks on a Pulse or ST200.

@BPRoberts: I had given some thought to ordering a Prybrid. You've pretty well convinced me to get one!

@JonesE: I'll be interested to see how the Fastback performs!

@cody6268: I've seen a fair bit of cardboard that was in a humid environment. Not a pretty sight. I have Stanley and Dewalt replacement blades at my disposal: we shall see which I prefer (if I don't wear out the Gerber originals).

Great kickoff, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 1

These two Gerber EAB Topos (which I found in a two-pack at Home Depot) will be my primary users for the month.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I used the silver one to dispatch some of those pesky plastic things attached to a new blanket.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Beijing seemed to like the blanket, but she's leery of any knife or multi.

Day 01
Today's carry came to me from the Sos Surprise Box.  It is a little heavier than I prefer in a utility cutter for carrying, but the weight makes it very comfortable for hard use, and it has some nice features.  I like the blade change without a tool, the liner lock, and the twine cutter notch, although, I've never used it.

Bonus:

Look, I actually got to use it! I like the idea of using the disposable blade for boxes and the regular blade for food.

Dan, I think it's probably the most practical of the four.

Day 2
The first place I looked for a replacement was at a MUJI store. It offered a nearly same design at the time, but with the plastic part being more edgy and square. The plastic was also shiny. So I did not buy it at that time.

Until one day they changed the part to be more grey. They changed the shape as well. This is when I bought the first MUJI cutter.

Muji chinese/Japanese name actually means non branded good things. Apart from designing their own, they look for good products and ask the manufacturer to produce their own version, often featuring designs that simplifies the outlook, exposing raw materials used etc.

This one the original non marked stamped blade is already replaced with a spare Tajima blade.

Day 1

My daily for this challenge is this Gerber EAB that I picked up from a knife lot I bought a while ago.

I never considered EDCing a utility knife until I ran into this one.  I use the money clip as a regular pocket clip.  It honestly feels indispensable now.  I'm currently using Klein blades in it but I'm not partial to any one brand of blade, yet.  Had a lot of junk mail to cull this evening after being out of town for the extended weekend.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to bail on this challenge as I'll be spending the first week of the month traveling and can't take anything with a blade. Will be fun to follow along with the rest of you, though!
