Day 22

My wife wanted a pack of scissors from Sam's Club, and it came with this utility knife. It's a big sucker, and has a seemingly excessive four different buttons on it.

Day 21 (catching up)

Cold weather and illness meant I had nearly no energy yesterday. This is about all I would have been good for.

Day 22

Of course, this medicine had an obnoxious seal. :twak: The no-namer in the kitchen took care of it, and awlso opened a bag of frozen burritos (I'm picturing AzteCypher shuddering at that).

Day 21

Did a little clean up in the garage on Saturday. Mainly cutting up some boxes from the big river and some other retailers. Wife likes to open up the boxes and dump the cardboard in the garage. So I got it all taken care of relatively quickly. Once done we got cleaned up and headed out to a pre Christmas get together with a couple of families.

Day 22

Did a quick little side project this morning while the family slept. Yesterday a friend asked if I could take a look at a knife he had. I said sure and he handed me this CRKT knife he had in his toolbox in the garage while we very visiting. It was missing some screws and a spacer between the liners. So, I disassembled the knife and proceeded to give it a good cleaning with an old discarded toothbrush and some 70% isopropyl alcohol. All the parts looked ok, except for the cosmetic wear. I searched through my knife parts bin and found two spacers and four screws I then reassembled the knife with some blue loctite and adjusted the pivot. Checked the blade opening and closing and was happy the the blade was centered and the lock up was solid with a1/3 travel on the lock bar for full lock up. Then dropped of the knife to its owner this afternoon while I was out on chores.

Day 23

My Trojan folding utility knife. No crazy features. Just one-handed, folding, and locking. Cheap. It works. Also thin. Kinda heavy, though.

Cutter #2 from Christmas package. I had been eyeing on this for a few years as well.

This Olfa features an extra long blade (20 snaps) with 3xtra thin 0.2mm blades. Normal A sized are 3.8mm. Olfa has extra thin at 0.25mm and 0.2mm and nt cutter has 0.25mm for sa-400grp. This cutter can only fit 0.2mm it claims (I have not get a 0.25 to try)

With 0.2mm blade install, the blade still move side to side a bit. The tip stamped OLFA TOKUSEN LONG which means specially made long blade I guess.

Engrave at the tip

There is no snapper, on the other end is a pointy metal part extended from the rail. It is intended for worker to pry open switch cover or unscrew screws from switch with it. The metal/stainless steel is hardened as olfa claims.

The body is dupped fiber glass reinforced plastic in some ads but I have not seen that in the Olfa site. The chrome on the stainless steel is very shiny but the edge at the rail isnt done very well.

Boring action of cutting open a pack of tissues

Trimming off a piece of loose thread

While the body of this cutter is not overly interesting, the blade itself is very very sharp. Now I got the "thinnest A sized blade" for no actual use (that demands the thinnest). But I finally collected it.

Day 24

Makita D-65713 8 blade cartridge L size

Seeing how cheap this 8x blade cartridge L size is. And it comes with 8 blades included as well. I can't resist but get one and see what it is about.

Makita is a reputable power tools company from Japan. This D-65713 is made in China and cheap. Costed ~usd$6 here. It is quite a deal with 8 blades included.

The patent held by NT Cutters for A-1000GRP and L-2000GRP I guess have long expired. There are a lot of copies or variations of the mechanism from different brands like from Chinese power tool/accessories brands like Greener. And this one from Makita is a cost down version with sized up blade storage.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Parts

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Back of parts

First the cartridge is expanded to hold 7 blades and made from mostly plastic. NT Cutters use a cartridge made from a single or 2 pieces of metal sheet (at least from a500 and a1000), Makita made it from 1 plastic and 1 metal spring sheet. I think this is clever because most workers view cutters as disposable tools, either they break, mess up from abuse or gets stolen. They must keep the cost down.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
The Makita comes with 8 blades, 7 in cartridge,  1 loaded

Secondly, they removed the dial lock at the tip (compared to PL-1 or L-2000GRP). This further remove number of parts and metal parts.

The reload mechanism is a copy of NT cutters. You push the slider all the way out then you can remove old blade and install new blade from the tip. Or, slide the slider bqck to load a blade from the cartridge.

The body is mainly plastic wrapped in rubber in classic Makita color, speaking the same design language as their power tools.

The rail is metal (not sure what kind of metal) and seems to be plated. The tip does not have the same level of precision as Olfa PL-1 and has more play. The auto lock of slider works, but does not give the same level of confidence and satisfaction with its less renounced clicks. The quality of plastic also feel less quality compared to Olfa and the edge is also has some blurs.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Tips compared to Olfa PL-1

In short, I am not very happy with this purchase, especially seeing the same shop is selling PL-1 at a little LOWER PRICE. But I do see how it creates an attractive package for the workers with its larger cartridge and increased number of blade storage and included blades. (PL-1 is 6+1 but 3 included, Makita is 8+1 with 8 included). But if given the chance I would buy 1 more PL-1 instead.

@JonesE: great work on the CRKT! :tu:

@LoopCutter: visiting Scotland would be nice. I'm just not a fan of the process needed to get there.

@ReamerPunch: sometimes good and basic is just what you need!

@kaevin: I'm gonna have to see if I can find a stateside source for Olfa. They sure have some nice offerings!

@BPRoberts: I haven't opened packs of razor blades in seemingly forever. As pressed for time as I am every morning, I stick with electric.

Day 23

"Lift and peel" is what I got after making an incision with the no-namer in the kitchen.

The orange juice is helping. I feel slightly better as of this post, but may have to cancel plans to work on the holiday. We shall see.

Day 24
Here's the Green Beast (Stanley 10-079) opening a package that was supposed to be delivered on the 21st.
It was the 4th package since November that tracking says arrived at the local distribution center and was then forwarded to another distribution center instead of going to the destination post office.  This one only took 4 days to return to the local distribution center and another day to be delivered.  I'm glad it eventually got here, but being late meant the contents weren't available to me before my overnight trip on Sunday. Thanks USPS.

Ended up getting two Stanley 10-099 also know as the 99E utility knifes to replace the lost ones in the garage. I plan on keeping one in the junk drawer in the kitchen one handy near the toolbox.

Here is another Stanley that came in yesterday and I just got it set up this afternoon. I picked up a 10-499 to replace the dreaded Dewalt that can’t seem to retain its blades. It looks good and feels good, but mine has been crap. I have attempted to fix it multiple times but the same issue returns. So I moved the spare Dewalt blades to the Stanley Dynagrip, my yellow one.

@cody6268: I'm right there with ya. A dress shirt for me is one with sleeves. :D

@LoopCutter: hope it warmed up, and you won't have a white Christmas. I won't! :woohoo:

@Alan K: they have Keurig machines or similar in hotels these days? And USPS deserves a good :twak:

@ReamerPunch: does that one tend more toward yellow or orange?

@kaevin: hope it was something good! :mail:

@JonesE: I've had good enough luck with DeWalt blades, but I guess I'll pass on their utility knives. :salute:

Day 24

Today was round one of Christmas Legos. I used the EABs to cut the seals on the Tiny Turbos canisters.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I was a little surprised that a small section of the first one remained uncut. That was the Stanley blade. No such difficulty was noted with the DeWalt blade, so it gets the win. And though there were no action shots, I used the kitchen no-namer to remove the cellophane on tonight's Nissin "chow mein" dinner.
