I took out the Canon 1D Mark II N along with the Bigma 50-500mm lens with the BushHawk gun camera mount to Bellvue Park in my city for a bit of a walk around. When I was going through great strife with losing family members, I buried myself into photography. When my father was battling cancer back in 2007, he would drive me and would sit at a park bench as I went around with mostly the same get up as I did today, except back in those days, the camera was a Canon 20D. Since then, I have hardly used it much since then. Well today I did take it out for a spin. I can see that I am out of shape. I tried to get a few birds in flights and those didn't turn out as well. Guess practice will make that better, and it could be a good reason to get some walking and fresh air.

Anyways here are a few of my photos taken today.

For some reason I like the first one most.

I find that my photo interest comes and goes, but the equipment and built up knowledge stays. Just need to exercise it a bit from time to time. Your equipment does sound like a bit of exercise too. :)

Well I had to buy a battery for the Canon 1D Mark II N. I just found out that my Canon 50D also needs batteries. I just put a full charge on both of my batteries nested into the camera grip and it was a no go. Got a pair of them with a dual charger on order. That means I won't be able to take the 50D out tomorrow. I might have to check all of my batteries.

Still having to use the Canon 1D mark II N but changed the lens to a 70-200 mm F4 L lens for yesterday's walk at the Sault Canal. Can't wait to get the 50D running again. These photos are mostly of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal on the Canadian side, with a few shots over the St Mary's river to the Sault Michigan USA side where the big ships go to and from Lake Superior, through the St. Mary's River to Lake Huron. Many of the shots were taken from Whitefish Island.

I like stone buildings. They seem to have more attitude than most modern boxes somehow, and they last a long time. Too bad they are way too expensive these day - at least over here.

Thanks. Just got my pair of replacement batteries for the Canon 50D. So that camera is back in operation. I am thinking my Pentax batteries are probably in an equal sad state.

Hope your batteries aren't too bad off. I guess if I ever haul off and get a DSLR, I'll pick up an extra battery or two. Or better yet, there is one out there that runs on commonly available batteries...

I am a bit excited and a bit dismayed at the same time...if that makes sense. I just purchased a used Canon 5D Mark II for a steal of a deal off of Amazon.ca. I have always wanted a full framer, and it looks like I should achieve that in a couple of weeks. Already bought the needed battery grip for it, which should arrive after I get the camera. Noticed the viewer extender Canon EP EX15 is harder to get. I will see if I need one. I can always take one off another camera if need be.

A bit dsimayed at getting another DSLR. I have 3 Canons (1 D Mark II N, 50D, and a Rebel Xs converted to IR) and 3 Pentax ( K 10D, K 01, and a K -r) DSLRs in the house.

On the plus side, I was able to re-charge my original Canon batteries for the 50D, so now I have plenty of power with 2 sets of 2.  :tu:

Here is my current Canon lineup.

From left to right is a
- Canon 1D Mark II N
- Canon 50D
- Canon Rebel Xs

Here is a Nikon Coolpix L32 which I bought for those times I wanted something compact to take with me on a motorcycle trip. I bought it because it is powered by a pair of AA batteries, which at the time, was important to me.

Got everything up and running, spending a good part of last night charging the various camera batteries. I am going to try to get out more often this summer.

Bonus photo of my EOS 1D Mark II N with a 70-200mm F4 L attached to it.

20240706_155300 by Chako, on Flickr

There is a difference between the APS-H which is larger than my other APS-C sized sensored cameras when it comes to depth of field and being able to seperate the subject from the background. Can't wait to see the full sized 35mm sensored 5D Mark II when it arrives.

I got back into seeing what the state of photography is these days and noticed that Canon is more going towards their R family of cameras that are now mirrorless. I was interested until I found out that their mirrorless cameras use a different lens mount and with all of my older lenses, I would need adaptors. I knew they also made an M series with different camera mounts, but looks like this series is all but gone for the newer R series.

After having to recharge my dead batteries for the Rebel Xs, I took it out for a short outing to the shop where I have found a few SOG multi-tools. Unfortunately, my muffler developed a loud leak just as I was pulling into the parking lot. Got an appointment for Monday. I digress, the Xs was purchased because it was modified to shoot only infra red. Here are a couple of photos I took before driving home judiciously in order to not get pulled over by the police and issued a ticket.

I know it is an old camera, but then all of my cameras are old...but I am very excited to finally get the Canon 5D Mark II in today.

20240715_121102 by Chako, on Flickr

20240715_121116 by Chako, on Flickr

lt came with 2 batteries, a useless neck strap, a tripod mounting plate (an odd thing) and the camera body. I took a good look at it and can't really see any wear and tear.  My guess the previous owner
was an advanced amateur that took good care of their cameras...like me, rather than a professional.

The first thing I did was take off the neck strap. I never liked those. I alreay got in the mail yesterday a hand strap from TinyRigs. Now all I have to do is wait for the battery grip to come in. I also ordered a Canon EP EX15 that I have on all of my Canon cameras. It is great for eyeglass wearers.

I found my old Nikon branded 16meg Compact Flash and decided to pop that into the camera. Got a flashcard is full warning on the upper LCD. I had to take out the 8GB compact flash I had stored in te Canon 1 D mark II N camera. Which reminds me, got a larger card on order as well.

I can't wait to take out my  latest DSLR for a spin. I am not sure why I thought there would be a difference in the cameras, as both date to the same era, but my 50D and the 5D Mark II are very similar in user interface. So much so that I was a bit worried that my used 5D Mark II came with no manuals. I guess I don't need them. In fact, the menus are even the same for the most part.

Can't wait to get the battery grip which should hopefully come in by the end of this month. Here is a photo of the 5D and 50D side by side
20240716_054110 by Chako, on Flickr

It is amazing how much of a difference the battery grip makes for a DSLR.
20240716_054136 by Chako, on Flickr

Here is the top LCD panel on the 5D.
20240716_054327 by Chako, on Flickr

Here is the top LCD panel on the 50D. It is physically shorter but has the same info in the same place.
20240716_054335 by Chako, on Flickr

Because the 50D is billed as an advanced amateur camera, it does offer more modes on the selection dial. I hate to say this, but I never really use those modes much prefering the more traditional manual, program, shutter priority, apperture priority, and bulb modes.
20240716_054346 by Chako, on Flickr

The 5D has less modes, but all the right ones are there.
20240716_054351 by Chako, on Flickr

Even the back controls are similar. No need to re-learn anything. A few buttons are in slightly different places but it is all familiar and quite intuitive. Here is the back of the 5D

Here are the back controls found on the 50D. Very similar.

I removed the eye extender from the 50D for now and placed it on the 5D. I have another on order that should arrive later this month...so the 50D will be whole again.
20240716_054936 by Chako, on Flickr

Yeah, so I tend to prefere battery grips, hand slings, and viewfinder extenders on my Canon cameras. Hopefully all of that will fix itself by the end of this month.

I visited the local pawn shop yesterday and wish I hadn't. I am struggling and debating with myself as they have a used Pentax K3 DLSR for around 600 Canadian that comes with a lens and battery grip. I am wondering if I should get it so that my Pentax system will also have a decent high end camera. I already have a K10D that I bought for my dad when he was battling cancer, a K-01 odd ball mirrorless, and a K-r.

Ah well, I did try to talk them down but they would not budge. I had to take it home with me. Once home, I was surprised at how much the lens was worth. If I factor that lens in, I got the body and battery grip for 100 Canadian. I paid 600 Canadian for it. Not bad.

My previous top end camera is the K10 bought back in 2007/8. I know there is a mark II and III, but this camera is a nice upgrade over the K10. Here are the both of them.

Before visiting the Pawn Shop, I took the 5D Mark II out for its first spin. I am so used to cropped sensored cameras that I was really feeling the short reach of the 70-200mm f4 L lens I used. With that said, I can readily see how the full sensor allows you to remove the background. Here are some of the photos I took with this camera.

I just took out the Pentax K3 and all I can say is wow. I have always had a soft spot for Pentax. I got that from my Dad. He grew up in the 60s and at that time Pentax was world leading in SLR technology. Back in the early 80s my father bought himself a Pentax P3. When I hit highschool and tool the photography class, I got myself a Pentax SF10. It was introduced in 1988 and was one of the first wave of autofocus cameras. I wanted one after seeing a Minolta Maxim 7000 from another classmate. I still have both cameras to this day,

The K3 is a fantastic camera. It feels great in the hand. It is very feature rich. I can see what it is their flagship camera for APS-C sensor cameras. I know they are up to revision 3, but the K for the price i got it, I am overly happy with it. Pentax always had exceptional lenses and top end build quality for their camera bodies. Pentas always had issues with slower autofocus. The K3 still isnt' as good as Canon in this department, but it comes really close. I was even able to get a bird in flight first outing with it. I am very impressed...definatelly happy I didn't walk away from this camera in the pawn shop.

Here are some photos I took with it.

I found a Pentax S at a local yard sale of all places. The Asahi S was their most limited run with only 4000 cameras ever made, and one just fell into my lap in my home town of all places at a yard sale. Best part is I bought it not knowing what I had found.

The best part with Pentax is its backward compatability. Meaning I can use my 1988 first gen autofocus lenses on my most current Pentax camera. I can even use manual screw mount lenses with an adaptor.

You are welcome. I just wish I had re-read my previous post and eliminated all the typos.

I had to move a few things but managed to get my Pentax camera bag out from storage. I added the K10D that I had in its own seperate camera bag and stored like that when I last used it, and the newer K3 to the bag. With the K3, this large Tamarac bag can no longer hold all of my kit.

Now I have 4 Pentax digital bodies, and 10 lenses.

1. Pentax K3 camera with battery grip.
2. Pentax K01 mirrorless camera.
3. Pentax Kx camera.
4. Pentax K10D camera with battery grip.

1. Pentax DA 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 fisheye.
2. Pentax DA 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR.
3. Pentax DA 50-200mm f4-5.6 ED.
4. Samyang MC 500mm Mirror.
5. Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 macro.
6. Pentax 50mm f1.4.
7. Pentax DA 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 ED AL (IF).
8. Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 macro.
9. Pentax DA 16-45mm f4 ED AL (IF).
10. Pentax DA 40mm f2.8 limited pancake,

1. Pentax AF-360 PGZ external flash.

There was an event happening down town and I decided to take the Pentax K3 and a fisheye lens.

Today I took out the Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 17-40mm f4 L lens. The photos were taken in a brief walk around the Roberta Bondar Tent on the St. Mary's River.

I really like the Canon 5D Mark II. I did not realize it came out the same time as my Canon 50D, so using it is rather easy as I am already familiar with it. The biggest different between the two other than the 5D has a much larger image sensor, is the 5D has a longer body, and there is no pop up flash on the 5D. Both cameras use compact flash and not SD cards. I really hope the battery grip comes for it sooner than later. That battery grip makes a world of difference in the handling of the camera, not to mention that with 2 batteries, you can go a long time before needing to recharge them.

As for the Pentax K3...that is a camera near and dear to my heart, except for one big glaring issues. Canon sells a pair of viewfinder extenders for their cameras. What this does is allow eyeglass wearers to see the whole frame. I am struggling hard with my Pentax. It also looks like Pentax  never made something like this for their system. I have tried placing both of the exteders on the K3 but neither would go onto the viewfinder. This means that when I use the K3, I am having issued with finding my horizons straight. With that said, I have noticed the K3 has an electronic leveling feature tnat shows how level your camera is inside the viewfinder. I am going to try that out...but I still have to do crazy eye searches inside the viewfinder to see the whole picture for composition. I won't give up that easy and hopefully someone somewhere makes something similar for the Pentax system. I have noticed that Pentax is a small company and everyone makes gear for Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sony, and sometimes Olympus, but quite often not for Pentax. Here is another funny story. When I bought the K3 at the local pawn shop, it came with a spare Nikon lens shade, and a IR shutter release remote. I tried the Nikon shutter remote and of course that didn't work. I went and searched online for one and only found a few that might work, I recall I bought one for the Pentax K10D back in 2007 because it fits right into the battery grip. Must be my OCD becsause leaving it blank was bothering me. Well that works greatly, and it still works on the original battery. Glad I remembered that and didn't buy another one.
