The race to the bottom
on: July 26, 2024, 03:13:32 AM
Over the many years I've collected many knives and tools, many surprisingly good.  But also, of course some that are not quite up there, and I thought it might be fun to see some of the misses. I can't recall accurately where any of these came from, but probably showed up in boxes of other stuff.  The fake SAK might have been in a drawer of my mom's house when we cleaned it out.

I'm sure I have a few more lurking here and there, but here are three of the most easily accessible winners so far.

I was going to go into detail, but I'll just let them speak for themselves.  The one with the wrench is almost useful, but the others are so bad they're comical. In my adult life I've lost a Leatherman, a variety of pocket knives too numerous to remember, and if memory serves, six Swiss Army knives, but I think if I went out and buried these they'd turn up again.

Well done, Bruto.  I always enjoyed the Cheap and Cheerful board.  For some reason, I like to see these old clinkers.  Best wishes.  G

There was a time when the market was awash in PST clones. Some so horrendous I threw them away feeling they were unworthy of my collection Surprisingly enough, no remorse.,
A little Leatherman information.

Here's one I almost forgot all about.  My wife has had this thing in the glove compartment of whatever her car has been, probably since the early 1980's or before.  I'm unsure of its provenance, as it bears no indication of maker or country of origin, its only stamping indicating that the spoon and fork are stainless steel.  I seem to recall these things being around in the 70's, and I think my mom had one.  In fact this might be that one. In the approximate era it comes from it was probably Taiwanese.

The quality is, of course, utterly dreadful, and though the idea is to have something in case of an impromptu picnic or an ice cream attack,  I don't recall that it's ever actually been used. As a knife, both its size and its quality render it essentially useless.  It's sort of a talisman these days.

I think all of those things are Japanese.  I have one that has the Mitsubishi name and three diamond emblem on the sheath.  The blade is stamped with G C Co. and Japan.  Gutmann sold the cheap things here along with others.   Back side of spoon and fork marked Stainless Steel.  Best wishes.  G
