Sad SAK Saturday
on: August 11, 2024, 03:48:15 PM
Yeah, it is something new.  Not too many different Daily Threads for Saturday and SAKs.  We all have nice SAKs, but somewhere in an old tackle box or back of a drawer is an old SAK that is in sad shape.
Dig it out and let that old clunker have its day in the sun.  One more time.  Scuffed up.  Found on a boat dock.  Bought for parts.  Broken blades.  Twisted screw turners.  Rust.  That's what we are looking for.
Everything you have is pristine?  You poor thing.  Just post a normal sort of SAK and put a photo of another knife or tool that is rough or rugged condition wise.  Be here next Saturday.  Best wishes.  G
 :ahhh

(Just as a side note for the younger, not US citizen, or comic book haters in the membership.  Sad Sack was a comic strip that used to be in Stars and Stripes during WW2.  The strip graduated from being used as toilet paper by GIs during the war to a full-fledged comic book.  Also a short-lived radio show.  Sad sack is a pejorative used for someone who isn't quite up to snuff.  Or an insult.  If you were caught snoozing instead of working, you might get called a Sad Sack.  Or if the non-com is in a foul mood, you might get called by the full sobriquet.  A Sad Sack of Smurf.  I was reading a comic book when I was a youth, and grandfather asked what I was reading.  I said Sad Sack.  He laughed until he coughed.  He knew the term well, I suppose.)

:iagree: I have at least one that could be included. And sooner or later (most likely later) an eBay lot of "junker" SAKs will come my way

I've got one here.  I've been doing a bunch of belated cleanup, which includes trying to round up various knives in various places, and came across yet another forgotten SAK at the bottom of a tool bucket.  This one, if I recall, came from a yard sale, and its knife blades were very badly ground already, and then the big one broke, and I lost track of it.  I'm almost ashamed to admit that this one is mine.

It's actually a nicer combo than the one I carry daily, because it has a phillips blade instead of a corkscrew.  I think this is likely to be my first experiment in SAK service. Aside from the bad knife blades and overall wear, it's very stiff and corroded, though a good dose of oil has helped a little.

The one I got on a boat ramp was actually pretty decent, and the one I carry daily, though very beat up, still has a sharp blade,  and I have a couple of others from yard sales and the like, one of which is a nearly mint blue Huntsman that I got for five bucks.  This one is definitely the negative champion.

ps yes I know it's Sunday already, but oh well, you need a goal to shoot for.  Find a worse main blade than this one.

Oooooooh!  I'm really going to be able to participate with this one.  I have a long line of Sad SAKs that are in need of a good clean up or repair, along with my donor SAKs which look even worse.  I don't know if I should be ashamed or proud to admit that I can probably go 30 days straight without using the same SAK twice.

It might turn out to be like high-school boys showing off their scars and bragging about them.  Bruto has first honors for posting a Sad SAK.  Not a beauty queen, but still able to fulfill daily duties in a very useful manner.  A SAK doesn't need the emblem or shiny tools to still do the WORK.
I think one of my favorite boards on the site before I joined was the Cheap and Cheerful one.  Stuff bought for a few bucks.  Often used.  Chinese clunkers.  The sort of thing you would display not in a showcase, but under a truck seat or somewhere in a drawer.  Found items.  Most of us have something.
We will try it a couple of weeks and see how things develop.  Best wishes.  G

I'm sure a lot of the guys are having sympathy with you for having to carry such a worn-out old plug.  Welcome to the show anyway.  I suppose 'sad condition' really is a relative thing.  I am afraid that friend Aztec might overwhelm us with clunkers, dogs, and wrecks once he gets started.  Maybe some of the others.
Meanwhile that old cross just might take the prize for the prettiest 'Sad SAK' so far.  Best wishes.  G

It must be Saturday somewhere.  Thinking about all our friends farther to the east of the US.  I think I will kick off the very first Sad SAK Saturday.  This is the 'good side' of a sad 58mm.  I found it lying on a secondary road.  The school bus comes this way and for some reason I thought it might have been tossed from a bus.  No scale tools.  Sort of squished together.  Probably from being under a tire of some sort.  Don't ask me why I kept it.  I don't know.
Best wishes.  G

That poor little thing has been to Hell and back umpteen times over! Did the liners, springs, or tools suffer any damage?

I will have to show the flip side some time.  The tools still open, but like I said, it has been flattened out somewhat.  Do you remember the day when you were a kid?  I would pick up stuff and carry it around.  All my friends would want to see it even if it were a piece of trash.  Maybe some didn't grow up in that world.
I don't remember why I came to the conclusion that the little clunker was tossed from the school bus.  The well-worn and busted knife that friend bruto showed is still a very usable pocketknife.  Not pretty, for sure.  Still could be a user.   Then there was the lovely OC belonging to friend knifecoop.  Just beginning to show the tiniest bit of wear around the edges.  Same sort of utility.  The only difference is.... with the OC, you could show it off.  The first example, maybe you don't.
There are more knife appreciators in this group than the usual.  Most of them wouldn't pry open something with a blade and bend it or break it.  The general knife carrying public just might.  There are lots of those sorts of knives in flea markets and in sale lots on the net.  I wonder just how many MTO knife buffs are really buying them?  Best wishes.  G

I didn’t realize how well SAKs really hold up (aside from the celidor scales) when I was looking for an example for  today. Here is a classic that used to ride on my keychain.

My wife had this from an old boy friend when we met.  Its scales led a rough life.  Anyone recognize the tang stamps, is this just a cheap clone of a Spartan?  Between the brass liners, pinned scales and the old style awl, it could be older than I think?

Looks like a pretty good knife. Still qualifies nicely as a Sad SAK. At least I think so. The tools look fairly Victorinox, don't they? Best wishes. G

My wife likes this knife so I keep it sharp and clean.  The scales and pins and liners make me think the knife was run over by a car before she acquired it.

It is still Saturday here so ... I think this qualifies: cracked scales, missing shield, scale tools and lanyard ring; the real deal is the broken file's spring ... I did polished the scales for it to look good though.  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Indeed there will be!

Tatty Rally has made a few appearances at MTo. It came to me as part of an eBay lot, for which I paid $1.65 per out-the-door. The dingy white scales with worn print aren't appealing, but the really sad part is the blade. It wouldn't even cut paper, and my unskilled sharpening job didn't help. Eventually it'll go off for a new blade and maybe new scales (if Victorinox's repair department keeps other than standard red on hand).

Apologies, posting late as I was helping some friends install motor mounts on their car.  I learned two things this weekend.

  • How to install motor mounts on a 2011 Kia Optima.
  • I might be starting to get too old to be rolling around under a car without a nice soft mat to cushion me.

One of my sadder SAKs.  These are the only two tools I could open without breaking out some pliers or another SAK to assist  This used to be a Wenger Traveler.  I think a good cleaning, oiling, sharpening, and a donor scale will bring it back to life.

It is Sad SAK Saturday again.  Sad SAKs don't really have to remain that way.  I will show one that I snatched from the Green Ripper and brought back to life.
This one had a bunch of problems.  No scale tools (which always makes a SAK look haggard.)  Big blade was bent and scuffed.  Screwdriver tip on can opener was twisted.  Someone did lots of prying with this one.  Scales were scuffed and had a large cut in them.  The cut went up one scale and even cut through the little metal inlay.  Scales were loose and the whole knife was dirty.
Rehab included sanding the scale so the cut is much less obvious.  I hand straightened the kink in the big blade.  A little metal polish here and there and a good clean and oil.  Scales were glued to remove the rattle and polished.  New scale tools.  The knife looks pretty good now.  No longer sad.  I have a couple of after photos.  Best wishes.  G

You must be in a damp/maritime climate.  There have been quite a few Leatherman multis on here with the rusties in various stages.  I like to use a stainless-steel rotary brush in a Moto-tool to whisk away the corrosion.  So far I haven't had rust problems with any Leatherman, and this is generally speaking, a damp climate.  Best wishes.  G

I'm with Gary: those look almost too nice to be parts donors.

There looks to be some aluminum oxidation and perhaps some dirt.  I'm hoping it just needs a real good cleaning and some oiling.  I have a few others ahead of it that I've been working on cleaning, oiling, and sharpening but I may just work on this one first as I feel bad for it.  Even with pliers I struggled to get the tools open.

Might as well post a Sad SAK for today.  I am actually carrying this one.  I kept it out of the Surprise Box so I would have something I wouldn't mind scuffing up in my always questionable pockets.  For the Delemont challenge of course.  This is the good side.  The other side is missing a scale.  Tools have various issues.  Completely usable regardless of appearance.  It is a Wenger Handyman.  Best wishes.  Gary
