DAY 30  Look, ma, top of the world!   :woohoo:

My only regret in this challenge is that I didn't find a use for the saw.  I console myself with how beautiful those yellow scales are.   Now I have to rest up for the MacGyver.

This is the point at which I give some thoughts on the Hiker. I think of it as the Warren Oates of the SAK world: a real great that never really got a big-time starring role. The real draw with the Hiker is the wood saw. For very little additional weight or bulk, you get an incredibly well-designed and useful tool. The Hiker is a great choice for anyone looking to try out the wood saw without spending a ton of money or risking a discontinued tool. The one I used in this challenge is the very one I was carrying when I discovered how brilliant the wood saw is. And I think it's telling that some pre-fab ESEE survival kits include a Hiker. Maybe now it'll step into a starring role?

It was great to host this challenge.  :hatsoff: to everyone who participated or checked in from the sidelines!

Day 30

The last official day of the challenge sees the Hiker posing with a Rubik's Cube you probably haven't seen before.

And with that, I'm off to request the badge and gauge the practicality of a Wal-Mart run.

@FX The one on the right is steel. The one in the box is brass, which seems to be the most common.

Day 30

If used the saw!  Trimmed an old piece of wood to use as a spacer. It was not the ideal too for the job, but it did get it done.

Thoughts on the Hiker? It's a Tinker with a saw. If you want a saw, great! It's obviously not an EDC necessity for me. If pressed, I think I'd rather step up to a Fieldmaster or down to a Tinker.

FX, thanks for hosting! I'll see a bunch of you over in Macgyver-land in a couple days.

March 30 Day Hiker Challenge
Day 30 of 30

This is what is left of my wife's  elementary school project,,, growing vegetables. Each student got to plant a seed and watch it sprout. She planted extras just in case one of the student's specimen dies,,,, which there were two this year. Now I will plant what is left in some pots and see if we can get a bit of produce.

Thanks to Farmer X for hosting the challenge!!

I can't say that I really used the Hiker at its full potential. It was always at the ready though. I also don't think I will put white scales on anything else though,,, they were always dirty and in need of a wipe down.

Day 30

Not much going on today with the Hiker. Just been doing some laundry and a trip to the grocery store.

I didn’t have a chance to use the saw during this challenge, but I have used it before on my Camper on both wood and PVC and it works great. It can also be handy to pop zip ties if you can work the tip of the saw under the tie.

I enjoyed the challenge and hope everyone had a great time joining the Forgotten Order of the Hiker!

:hatsoff: to everyone who participated, everyone who followed, and ReamerPunch for awarding badges to all participants!

Day 31

Here's the Hiker with what is now a typical user/carrier for me. The two were produced within a day's drive of each other.

@Echotech: it rains in Australia? I remember Darwin as being very warm and dry.

It sure does Dan :D

Darwin gets a rainy season being tropical but we get a lot of rain everywhere.

As you may know Australia is about the same size as mainland USA (not including Alaska) so we get different weather all over, even snow....in fact more snow than Switzerland as unlikely as it sounds

Currently inland Queensland is copping terrible flooding, there's an inland sea twice the size of Victoria, (one of our states).
Victoria is about the same size as the UK, so an inland sea twice the size of the UK

@Echotech: that's bad! I hope there is no serious damage from those floods.

@ReamerPunch:  For those who are unfamiliar with "Down Under" geography, I was referring to Darwin in the Northern Territory. I visited Darwin in February 2004.

Unfortunately there's massive damage to farmland and crops and at least 150,000 cattle dead so far  :(
