Nessmuk Axe (and sharpening and sheaths)
on: July 02, 2025, 10:51:39 PM
Got this Marble's axe for the Nessmuk challenge, and because I could use an axe to leave with the camper. It's very light (only about half a pound) and pretty short (about 15"), so not a heavy worker, but I expect to mostly use it to break up already smallish wood.

I'm passably familiar with sharpening axes (I can get them from not sharp to sharp), but I'd love any tips. I also came without any kind of sheath or cover. I have tons of scrap leather, and rudimentary ability to use it, so I'm sure I can put something together. Again, any hints would be good.

Definitely a bit of a gimmick buy, but we I wanted to try a double bit, the price was right, and it does fit the challenge. Hopefully it'll be a decent light worker.

I made a sheath for a double-bit cruiser axe years ago.  All one piece.  You had to pull the tool up through the top opening (which was covered by a flap).  The sides were closed by strong rivets and the top flap with a strong snap.  I used heavy leather.  The handle stuck out through a hole in the bottom.  I made it to be carried on a horse.  They do sometimes go down, and a stout cover was insurance against gutting a horse.
Best wishes.  G

I have seen a cover in that style, and I was considering something similar. Not sure about riveting it (I did most of my leatherworking at my old job, so I don't have a ton of my own kit), but I can always get a loop on there or something. It'll mostly just sit on a shelf when not in use, so the odds of it flying about is slim enough that I'm not too worried.
