I had a talk the other day where we discussed which job we had been most incompetent at. I think many of us has ended up in deep water at some point - some times after being helpfully thrown there by happenstance.
For me that point was when I was a student and worked part time at a department store. I tended to get moved around between departments when needed. One particular day dropped me in smurf way out of my depths: The lady who were supposed to run the cosmetics, perfumes and jewelry couldn't come to work. And for some reason the manager figured I could fill in.
I tried to channel my inner tv commercials so hence I sold creams with active cromosomes, moistury creams with extra water, and probiotic hair carbons. Which caught some cheery attention from lots of teenage girls and students. They tried, asked, and got clueless responses from me, but they were quite chatty and interested. Some downright flirty. I thought it went ok curing the day although few seemed to buy much.
The day after the regular employee was back on duty. And apparently there had disappeared more jewelry and perfumes from the displays in the one day with me than usual in a month. It seemed I had fallen for distractive chat and flirting operations while being cleaned out...
That was the end of my sales career within cosmetics, perfumes and jewelry.
